A woman's monologue

    page views:1  Publication date:2015-07-08
Turning thirty is always a difficult hurdle for women, a knot that's hard to untie. As written in the TV series "White Collar Qiu Xiang," "No woman feels good when she turns thirty."
Office worker Zhou Yifang turned thirty in fear and anxiety: her figure was gradually changing, her workplace was besieged on all sides, and her body was sounding alarm bells—everything foreshadowed something terrible. What made it even harder for her to accept was that she had given her youth to a married man who considered his marriage a failure; five years of dating hadn't earned her a promise of marriage. Like many who realize a major failure in their lives at some point, she began to seek change.
The novel meticulously portrays the psychological crisis of a thirty-year-old woman. In Zhou Yifang, every woman who has experienced an age crisis and emotional confusion can see herself reflected: hopeless relationships, the predatory gaze of younger female subordinates at work, the agonizing loneliness of late nights, the persistent anxiety and panic… While reading, I repeatedly thought of the novel *Bridget Jones's Diary*, which was a sensation in Britain a few years ago and later adapted into a film that became a global hit, and the novel of the same name as the popular Korean drama *My Lovely Sam Soon*. It suddenly dawned on me that major Chinese cities have long caught up with international trends, and older single female white-collar workers have become a significant social phenomenon that cannot be ignored. Regardless of their social standing or economic independence, older single women worldwide share the same mentality: the fear of dying alone and the yearning for a strong embrace.
Author An Yi's previous novel, *Wasabi Men and Women*, serialized on Sina, evoked countless sighs and reflections from men and women in love and heartbreak. This time, An Yi has struck a chord with urban white-collar women. Although the male protagonist in the novel is somewhat stereotypical, and although it is ultimately a somewhat clichéd modern Cinderella story, it is a warm psychological massage for older single women who are scarred by life's hardships.
