Shared wives during the Republican era

Ding Ling, born on October 12, 1904, originally named Jiang Wei, courtesy name Bingzhi, was from Linli, Hunan. Few would dispute that Ding Ling was a talented woman. A graduate of Shanghai University with a degree in Chinese literature, she was a renowned writer and social activist in my country. In 1924, at the age of 20, Ding Ling met 21-year-old Hu Yepin in Beiping. Similar in age and interests, the two quickly fell in love. Love was sweet; Ding Ling was surrounded by happiness, and she recorded in her diary how this budding romance filled her with joy, as if she had gained the whole world. However, love seemed to play tricks on her. While studying Japanese, Ding Ling met Feng Xuefeng, who was studying Japanese at Peking University. Their first meeting was quite ordinary; because Feng Xuefeng didn't dress well, Ding Ling's first impression of him wasn't very good. But during their subsequent Japanese studies, they fell in love. The timing of this love seemed ill-timed, as Ding Ling already had a boyfriend. Torn between Hu Yepin and Feng Xuefeng—two outstanding men—Ding Ling didn't want to give up either. So she made a bold decision: the three of them would live together. This decision would be shocking even today, let alone in the past. The three of them lived together for a period of time in a house by West Lake, an event that made Ding Ling highly controversial for a time afterward. Hu Yepin was very upset that his girlfriend wanted to "share" someone else. He returned to Shanghai and confided in his friend Shen Congwen. However, the thoughts of a scholar seem to defy common sense. Shen Congwen not only didn't advise him to leave, but also taught him the ways of a husband and wife. Unable to let go of Ding Ling, Hu Yepin returned to Hangzhou the next day to continue their life together. But soon after, the other male protagonist, Feng Xuefeng, broke down. Unable to bear living with three people, Feng Xuefeng chose to leave.
Feng Xuefeng's departure deeply saddened Ding Ling. From the contents of Ding Ling's letters to Feng Xuefeng, later generations deduced that Ding Ling truly loved Feng Xuefeng, and her feelings for Hu Yepin were merely familial. After Feng Xuefeng's departure, Ding Ling and Hu Yepin continued to live together. However, their happiness was short-lived. A year after their child was born, on February 7, 1931, Hu Yepin was executed by the Shanghai Longhua Command. After Hu Yepin's death, Ding Ling met Feng Xuefeng again. However, Feng Xuefeng was already married at the time. Faced with his former lover, Feng Xuefeng restrained his impulses and remained faithful to his marriage. After Hu Yepin's death, during an interview with an American journalist, Ding Ling met Feng Da, who was working as an English translator. This marked the beginning of Ding Ling's third relationship. At that time, Ding Ling was going through a very vulnerable period. Feng Da's care warmed her heart, and she accepted his pursuit. In November 1931, the two began living together and later married. However, this stable married life only lasted two years. In May 1933, Feng Da and Ding Ling were arrested and imprisoned. Ding Ling's imprisonment caused a great social reaction. In September 1934, Ding Ling gave birth to her daughter with Feng Da in prison. After her release from prison, Ding Ling chose to leave Feng Da, and the two never saw each other again.
In her search for love, Ding Ling yearned for true love deep down. After going to Yan'an, at a memorial event held by the arts community for the first anniversary of Gorky's death, Ding Ling met Chen Ming, a 20-year-old actor. Ding Ling was 33 that year. The sunny and handsome Chen Ming filled Ding Ling's heart with sunshine, but the young man initially didn't have any special feelings for her. Not long after, Ding Ling was appointed director of the Western Front Regiment, and Chen Ming happened to be the head of the propaganda section. Fate brought them together as superior and subordinate, and frequent contact at work led to feelings developing between them. It's said that it's difficult for a man to pursue a woman, but easy for a woman to pursue a man. In this relationship between an older woman and a younger man, Ding Ling was very proactive, perhaps due to her straightforward nature. Faced with Ding Ling's intense pursuit, the two soon confirmed their relationship. After they got together, Chen Ming faced immense pressure, with gossip and judgment behind his back. Under immense pressure, Chen Ming chose to break up with Ding Ling and married a woman named Xi Ping. After the marriage, Chen Ming discovered he had fallen deeply in love with Ding Ling and could no longer forget her. Ding Ling, disregarding Chen Ming's marital status, continued their relationship. Not long after, Chen Ming divorced Xi Ping, and in 1942, despite public criticism and condemnation, 38-year-old Ding Ling and 25-year-old Chen Ming officially married. After their marriage, Chen Ming took excellent care of Ding Ling, and to avoid interfering with their work, they carefully considered their decision not to have children. Although Chen Ming had no children of his own, he treated Ding Ling's children as his own. Chen Ming also demonstrated his true love for Ding Ling through his actions. During that turbulent period, Ding Ling was exiled to the Great Northern Wilderness for eight years and then spent five years in Qincheng Prison in Beijing. Throughout this turbulent time, Chen Ming remained by Ding Ling's side, and their love withstood numerous trials. Ding Ling and Chen Ming were companions through thick and thin for many years. Ding Ling passed away on March 4, 1986, at the age of 82. Chen Ming passed away on May 20, 2019, at the age of 102. Ding Ling's literary achievements are undeniable, but her love life has been the subject of much controversy. Personally, I believe Ding Ling must have possessed a strong personal charisma; she was a strong person in life. Each of her romantic partners was an exceptionally talented man. If she didn't have her own shining qualities, how could she have attracted others? Life is short; rather than living an obscure life and dying like a forgotten dog, it's better to live your true self and live a vibrant and fulfilling life in these last few decades!
