"Li Ping, open the door!" Chen Mo shouted at the top of his lungs, turning the key.

There was still no response from inside; the surroundings were silent. Chen Mo's heart skipped a beat; he had a bad feeling.

The key remained in the lock. He turned it again, seemingly unwilling to give up the last glimmer of hope. He turned back helplessly to look at Dawei standing beside him.

"Let me try!" Dawei wanted to step forward and show off his lock-picking skills.

Chen Mo didn't move. He put his left index finger to his lips, let out a long shush, bent down, stood on his right tiptoe, and looked at Dawei. With his right hand, he pulled out the key, palm down, and pulled four fingers outwards towards Dawei.

Dawei immediately understood, straightened up, and said loudly, "Brother, let's go buy something first."

"Great, a newly rented house with a terrible lock." Chen Mo led the way downstairs, deliberately making a loud thumping sound on the stairs.

The footsteps faded into the distance, as if they had already left the building. Only then did the people inside dare to let out a heavy sigh of relief. They hurriedly got up, frantically searching for their clothes, unaware that Chen Mo and Dawei had quietly returned, gripping the handrail.

Chen Mo stood before the door, his mind a jumble of emotions. He hoped someone was inside, yet he also hoped no one was; he wanted to uncover the mystery, yet feared he had guessed wrong. His complex feelings clouded his judgment, and he almost forgot his plan.

Dawei also crept up quietly, nudging Chen Mo as a warning. The two continued upstairs, hiding at the bend in the stairs, their four eyes silently fixed on the door.

After a long while, the door silently opened a crack, letting in a sliver of light. In that light, two figures huddled close together. Chen Mo could no longer control himself. He rushed down half a floor, only to see the iron door slam against the wall with a loud clang, then bounce back half a meter.

The room was simply furnished, containing only a sofa, a coffee table, and a panicked man and woman. They hadn't even had time to react. The woman covered her face with her hands and dodged to the side, while the man spread his hands, fingers spread, holding his T-shirt, preparing to pull it over his bare torso.

Chen Mo angrily swung his right fist, slamming it heavily into the man's left cheek. The man staggered back a few steps. He didn't retaliate; he was too ashamed to. He quickly picked up his shirt from the floor, squeezed through the doorway, and slipped away.

Everything returned to calm.

Chen Mo walked over, pried Li Ping's hands off his face, and brought his face close, gazing intently at this woman who was both familiar and strange to him.

He asked,

"Who is he?"

"How long has it been?"

"Not long," Li Ping replied, head bowed, feigning calmness.

"Heh, not long ago." Chen Mo's lips curled into a contemptuous smile.

He knew Li Ping never ate garlic, but a week ago, when he was on top of Li Ping, he clearly smelled garlic emanating from Li Ping's breath.

Time passed in silence.

The more Chen Mo thought about it, the more suffocated he became. Their years-long relationship was still so fragile, unable to withstand any storms. Recently, he had been busy with work and had temporarily neglected Li Ping, and this had happened.

He finally couldn't suppress his anger. Like a hungry wolf, he pounced on Li Ping, pinning her down. No matter how much Li Ping struggled, it was all in vain.

"You shameless slut, you have no shame! Since anyone can sleep with you, what are you resisting for? Come on, come on, I'll give you what you want." Chen Mo cursed as he picked at Li Ping's clothes.

"What, what else do you have to protect? Do you have any face left? Do you have any dignity left?" Chen Mo continued to curse.

Once, Li Ping enjoyed this human pyramid game of man on top of woman, and Chen Mo found it exhilarating.

But now…

After an unknown amount of time, they both finally fell silent. Li Ping was silent in her futile resistance, and Chen Mo was silent in the emptiness within his heart. He regretted his belated realization; he had actually believed that the bouquet of roses Li Ping had taken a few days ago was found. He tried hard to figure out what had happened between him and Li Ping; they had only been in Nanzhou for two months.

Night fell, and Li Ping still hadn't said anything, so Chen Mo didn't press the matter further. He got up and left dejectedly. He didn't know what to do, so he could only go to his good friend Dawei to confide in him.

They ordered some dishes at a Sichuan restaurant, and after a few beers, Chen Mo finally couldn't hold back his emotions, and tears streamed down his face. He poured out all his unhappiness to Dawei.

“Dawei, do you know what? We’ve been together for three years, we’ve even met each other’s parents. I never imagined it would turn out like this. We’ve never even argued. Why is this happening?”

Dawei didn’t know how to comfort him, he listened quietly to Chen Mo’s outpouring.

“We were classmates in college. She was delayed graduating because of her certification exams, so I rented a place for her. I worked part-time while studying with her. Back then, we were so sweet and happy. But now, three years of relationship couldn’t withstand the temptations of two months of nightlife. What can I do?”

Dawei didn’t speak, he just watched his brother weep. The only thing he could do was spend more time with his brother, have a few drinks, and the pain would eventually pass.

After a few days of painful healing, Chen Mo calmed down a lot. He found Li Ping, without resentment or anger. He silently rummaged through his suitcase and took out his few belongings, including his waterlogged and moldy college diploma.

Chen Mo prepared to leave this heartbreaking place. Li Ping acted first, closing the door behind her:

"I don't want to break up with you, please?"

"Fine, give me a reason!" Chen Mo said coldly.

"I love you, but I just have a little crush on him. He's only seventeen, a security guard at the company. It's impossible for us. Please give me some time," Li Ping said calmly.

"Fine, invite him over, talk... talk..." Chen Mo said coldly. Chen

Mo went downstairs and bought two beers and a pack of cigarettes. He returned to the room with a heavy heart. Li Ping stood trembling on the balcony. A man sat on the sofa, fiddling with his fingers, afraid to speak.

Chen Mo sized up the man who had been cheating, thinking to himself: "This kid, he's grown up, with a beard, doesn't look seventeen, but his youthful face still betrays a hint of fear."

Chen Mo silently turned the beer bottle he was holding back, calmly reassuring himself not to act impulsively. Relationship problems aren't something you can solve by cracking your skull.

The atmosphere was a little awkward.

"What do you guys think we should do?" Chen Mo asked.

The security guard took a sip of his drink, smacked his lips a few times, and didn't say anything, seemingly unwilling to fight for anything.

Li Ping spoke first: "It's impossible between him and me, he can't support me, but I still can't let him go."

Chen Mo's heart was churning, but he suppressed his emotions and said in a nasal voice: "What are you talking about? Do you expect one woman to serve two husbands?"

Chen Mo knew that further "chatting" would be pointless, so he ended the conversation early. The security guard fled like a child granted a reprieve.

Li Ping suggested they go for a walk together, and Chen Mo didn't refuse. While Li Ping was changing clothes, Chen Mo plucked a few hairs from his head, tied two men's slippers together, and put them back in their original positions.

They left, each lost in their own thoughts. Walking along the street, Li Ping was in turmoil. She wanted to speak, but didn't know how. She loved Chen Mo, but she also disliked his seriousness and lack of romantic understanding. She envied the sweet romance of young people, yet she didn't want to change her life.

Chen Mo was filled with emotion. The bustling city and dazzling neon lights had changed his world. Looking at the streets they used to stroll together, recalling the laughter they shared, Chen Mo felt a dull ache in his heart. They

walked for what seemed like forever. The shops along the street gradually turned off their lights, but they still didn't speak. Li Ping couldn't bear the torment of silence any longer. She took the initiative, handing the bag of snacks she was carrying in her left hand to her right, and slipping her left arm through Chen Mo's.

Chen Mo didn't speak. He pretended to raise his right hand to fidget with his hair, fixing his unusually shiny locks.

He really wanted to look back at Li Ping. He already had his own judgment. He thought of the joy and sweetness of the past three years, and he decided to give Li Ping a chance. As long as the slippers with the hair tied up were still there, untouched, he would forgive her.

But his male pride prevented him from telling Li Ping directly. He hoped Li Ping would understand.

...

"Chen Mo, Chen Mo!" Dawei called after him.

"What's going on between you two? It's been half a month, and you still seem sullen."

"I'm fine, Dawei, let's go eat pickled fish," Chen Mo said with a wry smile, looking down at the slippers he had just bought and was still carrying.
