What should a girl's vagina look like normally?

    page views:1  Publication date:2022-05-11
Many women are troubled by the appearance of their vaginas:
? One side of my labia is almost nonexistent, while the other is very long and large. Is this a medical condition?
? I always thought everyone's labia protruded, I didn't realize some are completely covered…
? I think it's from riding a bike during puberty, which caused my labia majora and minora to become shriveled.
Most women have probably secretly observed themselves in the mirror: "Strange, why is it different from what I imagined?"
Whether in pornography or comics, women's vaginas are always very symmetrical and full; this leads many women to mistakenly believe that their labia shape is defective, causing them to feel inferior and anxious.
Out of shame, many women never truly understand their own vaginas.

What does a normal vagina actually look like?
01. Where are the labia?
First, let's review the "layout" of the vagina:
1) Mons pubis:
This is the raised fat pad where the lower abdomen meets the genitals.
Due to differences in fat content and pubic bone height, some women have a higher mons pubis, while others have a less prominent one.
2) Labia majora:
These are two longitudinal, raised folds of skin. The outer layer is skin, while the inner layer contains sebaceous and sweat glands; it's also the area most prone to pigmentation and hair growth.
The subcutaneous tissue of the labia majora is mainly connective tissue and adipose tissue, making them prone to swelling under external force.
Due to congenital development, some labia majora are naturally full, while others are naturally flat. With age, the originally full labia majora may shrink.
3) Labia minora:
Located inside the labia majora, these are relatively moist skin folds with abundant nerve fibers. Therefore, compared to the labia majora, the labia minora are more noticeable.
Every girl's labia minora develop differently, resulting in variations in size and shape. Some are thick, some thin, some are rolled, and some are straight.
Furthermore, the shape of the labia minora can be affected by external factors during development, such as prolonged cycling, horseback riding, or wearing tight pants that cause local compression. Frequent pulling with the hands can also cause the labia minora to enlarge.
02. What are the normal shapes of the labia?
The structural relationship between the labia majora and labia minora can generally be divided into the following three types:
1) Completely covered: The labia minora are completely covered by the labia majora. In this case, the labia majora are usually fuller, while the labia minora are thinner and narrower, and are basically not visible without manual retraction.
2) Completely exposed: The labia majora are too short to cover the labia minora.
3) Partially exposed/everted: The labia majora are fuller, while the labia minora are longer or everted, resembling teardrops or butterfly wings.
Symmetrical or asymmetrical labia minora are both normal physiological phenomena.
Asymmetrical labia minora have different shapes on both sides, including but not limited to:
· One side is narrow and strip-shaped, while the other side is very thick;
· One side is almost invisible, while the other side can be spread out;
· One side is triangular and the other side is butterfly wing-shaped...
△The above are all normal labia minora shapes .
03. What kind of labia minora can affect health?
According to clinical practice, if the spread width of the labia minora is greater than 6cm, it can be considered "labia minora hypertrophy".
If it affects your private health and daily life, you can consult a reputable hospital about labiaplasty.
Symptoms include: pain while cycling, walking, or friction from sanitary napkins;
difficulty cleaning discharge causing odor;
inconvenience or pain during sexual intercourse
; difficulty urinating to one side due to enlarged labia;
and significant negative impacts on mood and psychology.
Why is it essential to go to a reputable hospital? Because a qualified doctor will assess your situation before surgery, reducing the risks.
Some women with enlarged labia may not be suitable for surgery. For example, if a woman has a blood disorder or pre-existing inflammation or infection of the labia, surgery may worsen her condition.
If the pre-operative assessment is satisfactory, the size of the labia removed is appropriate, and post-operative care is taken to prevent infection, labiaplasty generally will not affect health.
04. Is surgery necessary for asymmetrical labia?
If one labia is larger than the other but it doesn't significantly impact daily life, surgery is unnecessary.
Carefully washing the labia during regular cleaning and wearing loose-fitting pants can help reduce the discomfort caused by enlarged labia.
If a piece of the normal labia is removed in pursuit of a smaller or perfectly symmetrical labia, it may weaken the labia's protection of the urethra and vagina, making women more susceptible to urinary tract diseases and vaginitis.
Therefore, the labia don't need to be "perfect" in appearance; health is paramount.
Women should learn to view their bodies with the right perspective and accept them.
The human body is not perfectly symmetrical; even our faces can have uneven eyebrows or single/double eyelids. It's just that some people have more pronounced asymmetry than others.
For men, the most obvious example is that their testicles may be different sizes and heights; their penis may also be curved to one side.
Would a man have surgery to "straighten" his penis because it feels slightly curved? Or bleach it because it's a little dark? Or have testicular reduction surgery because his testicles are asymmetrical?
Absolutely not. For them, as long as it doesn't affect normal function and works well, it's a good penis.
Similarly, as long as it doesn't affect health, the labia come in all shapes and sizes, each with its own unique charm.
