Chapter 76 An Alternative Complex
(I'm still trying to adjust the word count per chapter, please forgive me, brothers. I haven't decided yet whether it should be 3000 or 6000 words per chapter.) The heavy snow had stopped, and the world was a blanket of white. In
a wing room on the left side of the inner courtyard of the Xiangyang City Lord's Mansion
, a large study was set up. The writing implements and Xuan paper for writing and painting were laid out on the table. The walls were covered with calligraphy and paintings, creating an atmosphere of scholarly refinement.
Zhu Yuyan leisurely reclined on a chair behind the large desk, silently observing the people below. She remained motionless, solemn and holy like a Bodhisattva, yet the eerie aura emanating from her was unique to the Demonic Sect's inner cultivation methods, like a bewitching demonic statue. These two extremely contrasting auras created a captivating and mysterious charm.
Wanwan stood respectfully beside her, her head bowed low.
Bi Shouxuan, Wen Caiting, Danmei, Elder Yun, Elder Xia, Bai Qing'er, Qian Duguan, and the others endured the piercing gaze of Zhu Yuyan, which seemed to see right through them. Each of them felt a sudden sense of dejection, a terrifying feeling that before Zhu Yuyan, who seemed to have some extraordinary encounter that allowed her to master the lost 'Dao Heart Demon Seed Technique' of the Demonic Sect, there were no secrets they could hide.
The group below trembled with fear. They knew that their submission to Bi Shouxuan was not for the sake of the Holy Sect or for their own interests; no one could say for sure. If Zhu Yuyan held a grudge, while she might not kill them for the sake of the Demonic Sect's future, she would certainly torture them severely as a warning.
The atmosphere grew awkwardly silent. Zhu Yuyan sighed softly, withdrawing her sharp gaze. Her ethereal voice, seemingly from beyond the heavens, rang out: "You may all rise. Let this matter rest this time,
but don't let it happen again." Zhu Yuyan had sat in the sect leader's position for decades, and this method of combining kindness and severity was all too familiar to her. The people below breathed a sigh of relief, feeling as if they had been granted a pardon, secretly overjoyed. They said in unison, "If we ever harbor any disloyalty again, we are willing to accept any punishment from the sect leader."
Zhu Yuyan rose, took Wanwan's expressionless hand, and said to the others, "I decided more than a month ago to pass the sect leader's position to Wan'er. You must assist her well from now on."
The people below were shocked, each lost in thought but daring not to show it on their faces. They bowed and stood aside.
Zhu Yuyan glanced at Bi Shouxuan, who was still kneeling on the ground with his head bowed, a fleeting look of disappointment in her eyes. She said indifferently, "Uncle-Master, get up. I can even release Commander Yan, so why would I make things difficult for you? Besides, you've already explained everything clearly. I was also at fault for not explaining the detailed reasons for those reforms to you."
Bi Shouxuan quickly thanked her and stood up.
After bowing again, the group left, leaving only the master and disciple behind the desk.
Wanwan frowned and said softly, "Master, Uncle-Master, he..."
Zhu Yuyan didn't answer, gazing at the white snow outside the window, her voice turning cold: "We've done everything we could. Now there's nothing more to hold back. Humph! I'll give them a good 'turn the tables' moment!"
※※※※※ Yuan Yueze arrived at the City Lord's Mansion and offered his condolences to the hardworking Shen Luoyan. Of course, the specific methods he used to comfort her were probably unknown to outsiders.
Emerging from the quiet backyard through the archway, Yuan Yueze encountered Ren Meimei, who appeared from around the corner.
"Ouch!"
Ren Meimei, seemingly lost in thought, casually threw herself into Yuan Yueze's arms, letting out a soft cry as if hurt.
Yuan Yueze naturally wrapped his arm around her slender waist, whispering with a chuckle close to her ear, "How could you be so careless, Sister Ren?"
Months had passed, yet she remained radiant, though a hint of resentment and a complex expression that even Yuan Yueze couldn't decipher lingered in her eyes. Her figure was still as voluptuous as ever; her loose autumn clothes couldn't conceal her alluring curves, especially her breasts, which were now intimately pressed against Yuan Yueze's chest.
Ren Meimei was just about to discuss the planning for the city's expansion during the winter with Shen Luoyan when a guard informed her that the city lord was bathing in the backyard. After months of getting to know each other, her relationship with Shen Luoyan had become exceptionally close. Having also had several encounters with Yuan Yueze's wife, she no longer cared about social hierarchy and barged into the backyard. Unexpectedly, she overheard an entire erotic scene. Ever since being looked at with disdain by Yuan Yueze once, and then being unwittingly groped by him at a family banquet, Ren Meimei had somehow changed her personality, losing all traces of her former wantonness. However, upon hearing the sounds of their passionate lovemaking inside, even though she knew eavesdropping was inappropriate, her feet wouldn't obey her, rooted to the spot. She listened for an hour before snapping out of her daze after Shen Luoyan's final long sigh. Cursing herself, she immediately prepared to leave. But, inexplicably, absentmindedly, she headed towards Shen Luoyan's boudoir.
Speechless after Yuan Yueze's words, Ren Meimei had, of course, fantasized about marrying the man holding her burning hot body before her. But she was self-aware, knowing she was a wasted woman. She had even considered offering herself, content with just one night with a man as unparalleled as Yuan Yueze. However, she had overheard that all his wives possessed their current allure and beauty through intimate relations, and thus, she dared not even entertain the thought of a single night.
Normally, if she knew that having relations with a man could grant eternal youth, she would, with her experience and skills, never miss such an opportunity. Although the idea of eternal youth seemed far-fetched, the living example of Shan Meixian made it impossible not to believe. Yet, Ren Meimei still suppressed the thought. Unbeknownst to her, the deepest love in her heart had been rekindled after Yuan Yueze's appearance.
Pushing Yuan Yueze away with all her might, Ren Meimei's cheeks burned. She lowered her head and said, "This servant greets Young Master."
Yuan Yueze stared at her without uttering a word.
Suddenly, Ren Meimei raised her head, ignoring Yuan Yueze's burning gaze, and anxiously asked, "I heard from Sister Meixian that Young Master has lost all his power. Is that true?"
Only after speaking did she realize that Yuan Yueze before her had hardly changed from several months ago. However, with her keen observation, she noticed a faint, eerie quality in his aura.
Ignoring her objections, Yuan Yueze took her soft, damp hand and led her to sit in the pavilion. He recounted in detail how he had offered himself as a sacrifice.
Ren Meimei felt dizzy. Although she had only met Yuan Yueze a few times, his familiar aura enveloped her. His large hand, as if possessed magic, seemed to hold her captive. A heart-stirring feeling welled up within her. She suddenly realized that her palms were covered in sweat from her nervousness and bewilderment.
Seeing her startled expression, Yuan Yueze simply told Ren Meimei everything. Then, a sudden silence fell over the world.
After a long while, Ren Meimei came to her senses and lowered her head, saying, "Why would you tell me these things, young master? Even Luo Yan hasn't mentioned them, so these must be the most confidential matters in your household."
Yuan Yueze's gaze suddenly deepened as he looked at the withered tree by the pavilion, saying, "Because I discovered that Sister Ren has fallen in love with me, so I told you all this. If you don't mind that I already have a family, then..."
Before he could finish, Ren Meimei suddenly burst into tears. How could she not know her own identity? After Yuan Yueze wiped away her tears, she choked out, "With your words, young master, I would be content to die. But I still know my place. I am a woman who can be with anyone. Young master, please don't mention this again, otherwise it will not only be an insult to me, but also show that you don't value yourself."
Her expression was so resolute.
It was indeed laughable that such a promiscuous woman would utter such words.
Yet, they were also so true.
Yuan Yueze remained silent, simply smiling as he looked at her.
Ren Meimei gritted her teeth and continued, "Just as you said, young master, I was indeed unconsciously attracted to you. Although I knew there could be no official relationship between us, I didn't care at the time; I only wanted a one-night stand. But then I overheard a little about you, so I dared not have such thoughts anymore."
She paused here, and after a long while, bravely met Shangyuan Yueze's deep, star-like gaze, saying, "Young master is the master of the world's affairs. Perhaps no one will remember you in the future, but you are an emperor in name only. An emperor's harem is vast, with countless concubines, but there is only one empress. Although..." "The sisters in your family treat me like their own sisters, but I know in my heart that in terms of looks, talent, and ability, only they are worthy to be your wives. To be honest, even I, who am always confident, feel inferior to them. Therefore, I never dreamed that you would be so frank with me. Today, I have spoken my heart's words, and I hope you understand my predicament."
Yuan Yueze listened and nodded, then his face showed indignation as he said, "You mean that because of your past conduct and abilities, you think we are not worthy?"
Ren Meimei breathed a sigh of relief after speaking her mind, and nodded sadly after hearing Yuan Yueze's question.
Yuan Yueze seemed to be talking to himself, "How regrettable it would be to deny a person's future because of what they did in the past?"
Ren Meimei said, "But those things are facts."
She had never regretted her past conduct, but as she said, they were facts that no one could undo.
Yuan Yueze said, "To some extent, I support Master Gu Long's 'prostitute complex'." Ren Meimei
was taken aback and said, "How could you say that, young master? I know you never spend the night in a brothel. And who is Master Gu Long?"
Yuan Yueze stared at her for a long time before laughing, "Elder sister seems to have misunderstood me. You must be thinking that if a man has this kind of complex, it's the most basic exchange of money and flesh, where a man gets the greatest respect and satisfaction from a brothel woman. In other words, it's the principle of 'the wild flower is always more fragrant than the garden flower.'"
Ren Meimei nodded silently; she did indeed think so.
Yuan Yueze shook his head and chuckled, "Actually, what I mean by Master Gu Long's 'prostitute complex' is different from what you think. Master Gu Long is a person who only appeared a thousand years later, famous for his writing. He once wrote: 'A prostitute's love is the truest,' meaning that a woman who has seen all aspects of life, experienced the coldness and warmth of human nature, and suffered pain will not easily fall in love, but once she does, it will be earth-shattering and unwavering until death. Just like you, elder sister, how can you be compared to your usual self? I, Yuan Yueze, never care about a person's appearance; I only care about a person's heart. To put it another way, if a woman appears pure on the outside but approaches me only for some benefit, I will never show her any kindness. On the contrary, a woman like you, elder sister, is more worthy of my love. Of course, I am not advocating for prostitutes; after all, not all courtesans sell their bodies for a living out of desperation."
Ren Meimei's face was streaked with tears, her teeth biting her upper lip, her body trembling uncontrollably.
Zhu Yuyan slowly rose from the mat in a very strange posture, pointing a finger at the empty space in front of her.
Just before she stretched her slender waist, Bi Shouxuan, standing to her side, was astonished to find that she was still sitting.
A series of bizarre yet incredibly real phenomena occurred to Zhu Yuyan.
Without any fancy moves, her finger, pointing inexplicably in a certain direction, struck precisely at the point where Xi and Zhao's vital energy connected.
Zhao Deyan suddenly felt a chill, looked down, and saw a hole the size of an infant's fist in his right chest, blood gushing out. Bi Shouxuan and Qian Duguan stared at him in disbelief.
Zhu Yuyan, seemingly unmoved, continued eating her food.
Xi Feng had long since disappeared.

Chapter 77 Yue Ba Enters the Pass
Ren Meimei felt as if she were in an unreal dream.
When Yuan Yueze left her full, moist lips, she was already lost in a daze, only knowing to lie on Yuan Yueze's chest, breathing rapidly.
She could clearly feel Yuan Yueze's two strange hands moving up and down over her two most alluring places. She was also surprised; a shyness she had long forgotten rose in her heart. Yuan Yueze's affection for her, through his fingertips, transmitted little by little to her burning body, and then rose into her mind, transforming into a virtual image.
If this was a dream, she would rather never wake up.
In the last moment before completely losing herself, she cried out in her heart.
Reality, however, was cruel.
Just as Yuan Yueze was about to go deeper, he heard light footsteps outside. Ren Meimei was startled and hurriedly got up. Her body was weak, and she almost stumbled and fell to the ground. She didn't dare to look at Yuan Yueze again and hurriedly slipped away.
A graceful figure in red appeared at the archway. It was Zhang Chuchen, the Red-Haired Maiden who had always served as Shen Luoyan's bodyguard.
Her clothes were simple, and her pretty face was free of any makeup, which only accentuated her natural beauty. Just like her personality, she was like a fire in the cold winter; no one around her felt cold. She glanced briefly at Ren Meimei's slender back—her hair disheveled, clothes in disarray, face flushed, and steps unsteady—before turning to Yuan Yueze. Her expression had changed to one of indifference. She said, "The Sha family has prepared a carriage for you, young master. Their steward, Sha Fu, is waiting outside for you to go out and see if it suits your taste." The
Sha family was naturally the richest family in Luoyang, and many members had served as officials for generations. Yuan Yueze's father-in-law, Dugu Feng, the head of the Dugu clan, one of the four great clans of the old Sui Dynasty, was the cousin of the Sha family patriarch. The Dugu clan's influence in Luoyang is now several times greater than before, and the Sha family has naturally benefited as well. Old Master Sha has many children, among whom his fourth daughter's husband, Chang He, is not only a renowned martial arts master but also a fierce general in the army. Appointed by Shen Luoyan, he is responsible for guarding the four gates of Luoyang, greatly enhancing the Sha family's prestige.
However, Zhang Chuchen's tone was strange, tinged with disdain, leaving Yuan Yueze
completely bewildered. Looking at her questioningly, Yuan Yueze wanted to ask, "Why do you seem so hostile towards me?" But he ultimately remained silent. Hate or love, in Yuan Yueze's view, these things didn't need a reason. Since the other party had no goodwill towards him, it would be foolish of him to fawn over her.
Nodding slightly, he said in a similarly emotionless voice, "Thank you, Miss Zhang, you've worked hard."
Hong Fu didn't say anything more, turned and led the way, the two walking towards the front courtyard.
Halfway there, Hong Fu suddenly turned back and asked, "Why has Young Master recovered so quickly?"
Yuan Yueze gave her a brief explanation.
Many within the group knew about his role as a 'furnace', but in the following two months, Yuan Yueze completely disappeared from public view. Apart from his many wives, no one knew where he was or what he was doing. In reality, he had simply used the method summarized by Xiang Yutian, through quiet meditation, to transform death energy into his true energy. In just a few months, he had recovered at least 80% of his power, and his demeanor, influenced by the death energy, had taken on a slightly eerie quality. However, the steadfastness of his Dao heart transcended the realm of words, so his rigid and taciturn nature was not actually affected much.
Hong Fu said sarcastically, "I never expected that you, young master, could take the 'Empress of Yin,' who has been famous throughout the world for decades, as your wife. I truly admire you."
Yuan Yueze snorted coldly, "Miss, please do not insult my wife, otherwise I am afraid that I will lose my temper and break my promise to Brother Zhang that day to protect you." With
just one sentence, the atmosphere between the two changed drastically. Hong Fu's cherry lips trembled, and she turned her head away with murderous intent.
Yuan Yueze shook his head helplessly. Shan Meixian had once said that Hong Fu's personality was fiery and unyielding. She probably disapproved of the increasing number of women in Yuan Yueze's household, believing him to be a promiscuous man, which explained her disdain for him. However, due to her promise to assist him, Hong Fu did not leave, only showing no respect to Yuan Yueze. But she still crossed Yuan Yueze's bottom line, leading to the scene just now.
Stepping out of the mansion, Yuan Yueze was startled. On the wide road, there were three luxurious four-wheeled carriages that were beyond his imagination. Without even greeting the man in his forties who looked like a steward, he carefully observed them. The carriages were exquisitely carved, and the curtains inside and outside the carriages were made of high-quality silk. The carriages were spacious and could comfortably accommodate at least five people sleeping.
It would probably take a hundred workers several months to build just one of these carriages, and now there were three of them in front of Yuan Yueze. After a moment of stunned silence, he pointed to the carriage road and asked, "What's going on here?"
The steward replied respectfully, "I am Sha Fu, the steward of the Sha family. These three carriages were commissioned by Lord Shen to General Dugu, who then passed them down to the Sha family. They were made by 210 workers over five months. I wonder if you are satisfied, young master?"
The Sha family started with mining and is renowned for its hardware craftsmanship. They also have businesses in other fields. Just by looking at these three carriages, one can infer the Sha family's manpower and resources.
But Dugu Feng's good intentions had clearly backfired. Whether it was his intention or the Sha family's attempt to demonstrate loyalty was unclear, Yuan Yueze frowned and said, "How much money will this cost? Father-in-law is really reckless. Wouldn't it be better to spend this money on more important matters? We can walk to Chang'an!"
"Hmph!"
A delicate snort rang out. Yuan Yueze looked over and saw Dugu Feng in a black, tight-fitting warrior's outfit. Beside her stood a beautiful, slender young woman in elegant attire, standing a few feet away, scrutinizing him with her large, beautiful eyes, as if trying to see right through him. Her gaze was direct and bold. Unexpectedly, his
flattery had backfired. Sha Fu coughed awkwardly and said to the woman, "This humble one greets Fifth Miss."
Dugu Feng pouted and came to Yuan Yueze, taking his arm and saying reproachfully, "We'll be going to Chang'an in less than ten days. It's over a thousand miles to Guanzhong. All the sisters are going; of course, we can't let our elder brother down."
Yuan Yueze shook his head and sighed, his gaze turning melancholy.
Such matters of appearances were of utmost concern to him, just as fame and fortune held no appeal for him. It was precisely this character that earned him Yun Jizi's appreciation.
Dugu Feng pouted helplessly and changed the subject, saying, "Uncle Fu, you've worked hard. Please go back now. I'll thank you at the Sha residence another day."
Sha Fu quickly took his leave. Glancing at Hong Fu
, who was staring at him with surprise, and the 'Fifth Miss', who was curiously observing him, Yuan Yueze had no interest in speaking and turned to go home.
After watching him and Hong Fu leave, Dugu Feng asked the 'Fifth Miss,' "Cousin, what do you think of my elder brother?"
The 'Fifth Miss' looked puzzled and paused for a moment, then said, "Young Master Yuan is indeed extraordinary. Who wouldn't be overjoyed to see such a fine carriage?"
Dugu Feng said proudly, "My elder brother is truly concerned about the country and its people!" The
'Fifth Miss' didn't reply, but simply gazed in the direction where Yuan Yueze had disappeared with a complex expression.
※※※※※ Song Shidao, disguised as Yue Shan, finally arrived at the peach grove on the south bank of the Yellow River that evening.
After Li Shimin defeated the Western Qin army of Xue Ju and his son, his prestige soared. Many neutral cities near Tongguan surrendered to the Tang Dynasty, paving the way for the Tang army to exit the pass. Taolin was one of them, hence the Li clan's banners were displayed on its city walls. After entering the city, Song Shidao rested in the wilderness to conserve his strength for the next morning's entry into the pass.
The Weihe Plain area where Chang'an is located is called Guanzhong because it is surrounded by four passes: Tongguan to the east, Dasanguan to the west, Wuguan to the south, and Xiaoguan to the north.
Tongguan, the foremost of the four passes, was built by the Qin people during the Warring States period. It is bordered by the Yellow River to the north and mountains to the south, stretching over a hundred li from east to west. The road is built through the cracks in the rocks, so narrow that "carts cannot pass side by side, and horses cannot ride abreast." It is said to be so formidable that "one man can hold the pass against ten thousand." Originally named Hangu Pass, it was renamed Tongguan after the Eastern Han Dynasty.
During the Warring States period, the six states repeatedly formed alliances to attack Qin from the west, but each time they ended up suffering a tragic defeat at Hangu Pass.
Twin peaks rise beside the great river; Hangu Pass has been a battlefield since ancient times.
It was this strategically vital location, contested by military strategists, that kept Chang'an as stable as Mount Tai, shielding it from the flames of war beyond the pass.
He spent a comfortable night in the wilderness, and at dawn, he donned the mask of Yue Shan. Using cosmetics and dyes he had purchased along the way, and drawing upon his experience from Yuan Yueze over the past few months, along with Hou Wenqing's advice, he dyed the exposed skin of his clothes to resemble the mask's color, so as not to be detected by any observant or astute individuals.
The closer he got to Guanzhong, the more cautious he became. Whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, he constantly practiced the intricacies of impersonating Yue Shan, relying on his extraordinary memory, and repeatedly memorized the events and stories recorded in Yue Chuan's lost scroll. He even developed a strange feeling that he had transformed into Yue Shan.
Upon entering the city, he swaggered into a very large restaurant for breakfast.
The moment he crossed the threshold, he sensed something was amiss. In
the dining hall, which had about thirty large round tables, only one table in the center sat a tall, burly man in fine clothes, while the owner and waiters stood respectfully to the side.
Seeing him arrive, the man rose proudly and bowed, saying, "This junior, Yang Wengan of the Jingzhao Alliance, pays his respects to Senior Yue. I have prepared a feast to welcome you."
With a clap of his hands, the waiters immediately brought out a stream of delicacies and wine, filling the table.
Yang Wengan personally pulled out a chair and invited Song Shidao to sit down.
Song Shidao's gaze fell upon the lavish feast, enough to feed at least twenty people, and then fixed on Yang Wengan.
The Jingzhao Alliance was the largest gang in Guanzhong, and Yang Wengan was its leader, with extensive connections and influence both in Guanzhong and Guandong. Moreover, he was a member of the Prince Yuanji's faction, responsible for spreading intelligence throughout Guandong. So why would he prevent Yue Shan from entering Guandong? He intercepted Yue Shan just before Yue Shan's entry and even knew Yue Shan's identity, indicating that he had mobilized an immeasurable amount of manpower and resources behind the scenes, demonstrating considerable ability.
Even though Yang Wengan was appointed as the governor of Qingzhou, he couldn't hide the air of a gangster. He was quite handsome, but his demeanor and actions exuded arrogance, a deep belief that he could manipulate events at will, as if the heavens had particularly favored him.
In reality, Song Shidao knew that Yang Wengan was the eldest son of Xiang Gui, the head of the Xiang family. Years ago, Xiang Gui sent him to the court to serve Yang Guang personally, providing for his sensual needs. As a result, Yang Guang bestowed upon him the surname Yang, transforming him from Xiang Wengan into Yang Wengan, and he established the Jingzhao Alliance, whose influence spread throughout Guandong. On the surface, the Jingzhao Alliance appears to be fully supporting Li Jiancheng, but in reality, they harbor ulterior motives and are only looking out for themselves.
Secretly forming the 'Unmoving Fundamental Seal,' Song Shidao coldly said, "What exactly are you plotting by hosting this banquet for me with such obsequious hospitality? If you dare to spout nonsense, don't blame me for being impolite."
Yang Wengan first dismissed the servants, then calmly moved to the opposite side of the table, smiling slightly, "Old Yue, your temper is still so fiery. Why don't you sit down and have a drink first, and then I'll explain in detail?"
Just by looking at his gait and demeanor, one could tell he was definitely a first-rate master. Even if he wasn't as good as Song Shidao, he was still quite close. "It shouldn't be too far," he thought with surprise, and snorted coldly, "I'm itching for a fight! If you waste my time any longer, I'll regret it."
Yang Wengan didn't answer but asked in return, "Does Elder Yue want to enter Guanzhong?"
Yang Wengan's arrogance and fearless demeanor made Song Shidao's heart stir. He withdrew his attention from him and searched the surrounding area within ten zhang, and sneered, "You dare to interfere in my affairs? You must be tired of living."
Yang Wen hurriedly said, "Wait! As long as I show Elder Yue one item, he will understand everything."
He reached into his robes.
Just as he spoke, Song Shidao resolutely dodged forward, narrowly avoiding a sharp, lightning-fast sword light shooting from behind.
But in that instant, several strange, swirling, oppressive energies suddenly enveloped his entire body; the aura was very familiar.
Xi Feng. A
burly, black figure shot down from the ceiling, golden light filling the sky, several evil dragons thrusting at Song Shidao's head from treacherous angles.
Without time to think, Song Shidao, who had fully integrated the essence of the relic over the past few months, was no longer the same novice. His left hand flew, performing countless wondrous transformations, ultimately forming a thumbs-up gesture, blocking Xi Feng's strongest strike.
"Bang!"
The energies collided, and Song Shidao only took one step back.
Calming himself down, he realized that two people were standing in front of him and behind him. In front of him was Xi Feng, who looked surprised and held a golden spear; behind him was a young man in black, also wielding a sword. Although they hadn't fought before, Song Shidao could deduce from their swordsmanship and cultivation that the one who had launched the sneak attack was the 'Shadow Assassin' Yang Xuyan. Their pincer movement was indeed making things difficult for Song Shidao.
In a flash, countless thoughts raced through his mind: half a month ago, he had received a letter from Song Yuzhi saying that Yang Xuyan, under the protection of Fu Junzhuo and Wei Zhenzhen, had used a diversionary tactic to kill Wang Shichong, who only had half a month left to live. Although the letter wasn't very clear, Song Shidao knew that it must have been Xi Feng himself who had intervened; otherwise, how could he have held back the two women, Fu Junzhuo and Wei Zhenzhen, who possessed cultivation levels of Celestial Realm? Although he didn't know why Yang Xuyan hadn't appeared in Chengdu, he should have already betrayed Shi Zhixuan and joined the Great Ming Sect. Since Yue Shan was well aware of the conspiracy between Xi Feng and Li Yuanji that the Demonic Sect and Bi Shouxuan had revealed in their moment of triumph, Xi Feng absolutely could not be allowed to enter the pass to see Li Yuan, lest he ruin the Great Ming Sect's good plan. Yang Xuyan wore a smug expression; in reality, he probably didn't know Xi Feng's true identity—just a pitiful wretch.
There was no movement under the hall with a hole in the ceiling, but Song Shidao knew perfectly well that he was trapped in a tight encirclement. Aside from the others, Xi Feng alone was already difficult to deal with. He also remembered that Yuan Yueze had mentioned another axe-wielding divine general with astonishing strength. If that person was lurking nearby, how could Song Shidao possibly survive today?
But he was fearless. He concentrated Yue Shan's inner power, and his eyes naturally shone with the unique divine light that Yue Shan possessed in his lifetime. He said expressionlessly, "Very well, very well. My purpose in coming here was naturally to settle scores with you in Guanzhong. I didn't expect to meet you here. I will definitely avenge the day I crippled your cultivation!"
Xi Feng's heart skipped a beat. This was exactly what had been bothering him. Logically speaking, he had witnessed Yue Shan's meridians being crippled, so how could he be standing unharmed before him now? Not only that, but the other party's cultivation seemed to have increased even more.
Was the Sun-Changing Technique really that miraculous?
Xi Feng wondered.
But he still sneered, "The Sun-Changing Technique has indeed exceeded my expectations, but you must die here today!"
After saying that, his eyes blazed with killing intent, his long hair moved without wind, and the surrounding air immediately began to swirl around him, from slow to fast, with a fierce and surging force, chilling to the bone, and terrifying in its power.
Knowing that the opponent was about to make their move, and that this was merely a prelude to gathering his strength, Song Shidao smiled slightly and said, "That's right, why didn't your Uncle-Master Bi come with you?"
As he spoke, he secretly formed the Treasure Vase Seal, his mind entering a state of perfect stillness and movement, a state of perfect harmony between the sun and moon, his spiritual platform becoming crystal clear. His spiritual sense immediately expanded to the vast surrounding space, allowing him to discern that Yang Wengan and Yang Xuyan were both lying in ambush on either side of him, and that there were no other enemies.
He knew that Zhu Yuyan had defeated Bi Shouxuan, Zhao Deyan, and Xi Feng. On that day, Xi Feng had escaped by using a scheme and drawing upon Zhao Deyan's hidden strength. Now that his wounds had been reopened, his gathered momentum had weakened somewhat.
But was Xi Feng someone to be trifled with? He roared with laughter, "Yue Shan, do you really think Xiao Yan loves you? My grand-uncle once said she only chose you as her heir because you're so detestable. She's already given herself to your grandson-in-law, Yuan Yueze!"
With that furious shout, he thrust his spear straight at Song Shidao's chest.
If these words had been spoken to the real Yue Shan, they might have worked, but the Yue Shan opposite him was a complete imposter. Xi Feng
's spear was incredibly cunning and unpredictable, and this simple thrust was a concentrated essence of the spear, like blasting a breach in a dam battered by crashing waves. All the energy that had been swirling around him converged on the spear tip, forming a highly concentrated column of energy that shot towards Song Shidao with increasing speed. The air within a radius of several feet centered on him suddenly became completely still, emptied by his earth-shattering thrust—a terrifying sight.
Song Shidao sneered, unleashing his technique to deflect the opponent's force. He first swayed left and right, using his protective inner energy to disperse the first two waves of energy. Then, he pointed a finger, using the Treasure Vase Seal Technique to unleash the most concentrated inner energy than the tip of the opponent's spear, shooting it forward against the current. He immediately withdrew his finger strike, then clasped his hands together, sending out another surge of energy to meet the opponent's third and strongest wave of inner energy.
"Bang!" The energy clashed, producing a dull yet piercing sound. Song Shidao's blood surged; he realized that Xi Feng's internal martial arts cultivation was nearly a hundred years old, truly terrifying. Using his unique inner energy, he redirected the opponent's lethal inner energy from his meridians through the Yongquan acupoints on the soles of his feet, causing dust to suddenly rise from the room.
Xi Feng let out a soft snort, trying to dodge, but the force of the finger strike was too overwhelming, making it difficult for him to unleash another consecutive thrust.
Song Shidao channeled his inner energy, leaping into the air like lightning, and laughed loudly, "Young man, your spear skills are getting worse and worse! See you in Chang'an!"
Xi Feng's figure emerged from the dust, followed by Yang Xuyan and Yang Wengan.
Xi Feng coldly shouted, "I can't believe he's running away so cowardly! Chase after him!"
Yang Xuyan raised his hand to stop him, saying, "Venerable One, please don't chase him. With his abilities, you probably can't catch him anyway."
Yang Wengan said dejectedly, "He wanted to seek revenge on you, Venerable One, but he just ran away like this. He must have seen our secret together. What will we do if he tells Prince Qi in the future?"
Yang Xuyan's eyes flashed with a sinister light, and he sneered, "Given his personality, he would never do that. At most, he'll only tell Li Yuan, and Li Yuan doesn't actually know our greatest 'advantage,' so it won't matter if he does."
The three exchanged glances and chuckled in unison.
※※※※※ Liangdu, Young Marshal's Mansion.
The exceptionally beautiful Shi Feixuan sat gracefully opposite Xu Ziling, saying elegantly, "If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I truly wouldn't have imagined that Brother Xu would possess the 'Nine-Syllable Mantra Mudra' of Master Zhenyan. You can't be said to be without affinity for Buddhism."
She was still dressed as a man, her hair tied back in a soft bun, wearing coarse linen clothes, a cotton-padded jacket over a plain white one, soft leather boots, and a white sword on her back. Her upright posture was perfectly serene and aloof, like a statue sculpted from celestial jade.
Xu Ziling looked embarrassed. This mudra had been secretly passed on to him by Song Shidao more than a month ago, who had made him swear never to tell anyone. Only now did he realize that it was a method created by someone called 'Master Zhenyan'.
Shi Feixuan continued, "Brother Xu, do you know the true identity of 'Master Zhenyan'?"
Xu Ziling shook his head blankly.
Shi Feixuan smiled slightly and said, "Our sect has had the position of 'Guardian of the Mountain Gate' for many years. This person does not necessarily have to be proficient in martial arts. Master Zhenyan's Buddhist teachings are profound, and his Zen state is extremely deep. He was our previous 'Guardian of the Mountain Gate.' We have an unwritten rule that the next Guardian of the Mountain Gate is chosen by the current Guardian. Feixuan had to leave Chengdu in a hurry that day and was unable to witness Master Zhenyan's passing. However, Master Zhenyan passed on the Zhenyan Seal Technique to you, which has a profound meaning. We, the younger generation, cannot fathom the mysterious cause and effect and fate involved. Feixuan believes that he must have chosen you as the successor to the 'Guardian of the Mountain Gate.'"
After a pause, she continued, "However, even if Brother Xu doesn't accept this identity, our sect will not mind. It doesn't matter if this tradition of protecting the sect doesn't disappear!"
Xu Ziling felt distressed. He was caught in a dilemma, unable to break his vow and tell the truth, yet unable to bring himself to deceive this compassionate and benevolent fairy before him. He could only bite the bullet and answer irrelevantly, "Miss Shi, your purpose in coming here all this time is to get Kou Zhong to surrender to Li Shimin, isn't it?"
Shi Feixuan gazed at Xu Ziling with serene and clear eyes for a long time before softly saying, "For the sake of our sect, Feixuan has studied history and literature since childhood, trying to understand the causes and effects of order and chaos. Politics has always disregarded motives and methods, only focusing on consequences. We fully support Li Shimin because we believe he is the best candidate to bring happiness to the world. Your brother or the invincible ruler..." He is handsome, but lacks Li Shimin's talent and ambition in governing the country. If Consort Xuan were to stand idly by, the opportunity for unification and peace would be lost. The Tang Dynasty would shift from strength to weakness, and the allied forces from beyond the Great Wall would seize the opportunity to invade. The Turkic leader Jieli has been preparing for this for a long time; even if he cannot completely pacify the Central Plains, the damage will be severe and far-reaching, and the suffering of the people will be endless. The Central Plains may never recover its former strength.
Xu Ziling trembled slightly, and after a long silence, he said in a deep voice, "What Miss Shi said is indeed reasonable, but I believe that Kou Zhong may not be fit to be emperor, but he has the essence to govern a good country because he has no selfish motives. If he selects capable officials and his martial prowess is sufficient to control both inside and outside the Great Wall, great order will surely follow the chaos. Therefore, although I abhor war, I still have no choice but to support him. But if we involve the allied forces from beyond the Great Wall, things will be very difficult to imagine."
Consort Xuan nodded.
Xu Ziling suddenly seemed to remember something and asked doubtfully, "Logically speaking, Miss and your sect should support Sister-in-law Luoyan." A
look of bewilderment finally flashed in Shi Feixuan's clear, beautiful eyes, and a faint, bitter smile appeared at the corner of her lips. "We have two reasons for not supporting Young Master Yuan. First, naturally, he is a member of the Demonic Sect, and after gaining power, he suppressed the traditionally peaceful Buddhist sect in Luoyang. Second, and most importantly, although Luoyang is a fortified city, it is located on a plain and lacks natural defenses. Imagine if Young Master Yuan ultimately succeeds in capturing Chang'an, he will be severely weakened. Li Shimin can still retreat to Taiyuan and Longxi, launching a full-scale counterattack with the remaining troops in Taiyuan and Guanzhong. At that time, both sides will inevitably suffer heavy losses. With the fate of the world still uncertain, the allied forces from beyond the Great Wall suddenly invade from the south. Who wants to see such consequences? And this is precisely the cruel reality."
She only mentioned Yuan Yueze, not Shen Luoyan, which clearly showed that in the eyes of outsiders, Shen Luoyan was merely a puppet.
"Pah!"
An angry voice came from the doorway.

Chapter 78 The merging of Dao and Demon.
The two didn't even need to look to know it was Yuan Yueze's voice.
Yuan Yueze, dressed in a tight-fitting outfit, and Zhu Yuyan appeared at the door.
Shi Feixuan showed no surprise, performed the junior's greeting, and said, "Feixuan respectfully greets the 'Empress of Yin' on behalf of her master."
The matter of Zhu Yuyan and Yuan Yueze had spread rapidly. Shi Feixuan had been in the vicinity of Liangdu and Pengcheng, so there was no reason for her not to know. She believed that in a few days, everyone in the world would know.
Zhu Yuyan carefully looked Shi Feixuan over and said calmly, "So you are a disciple taught by Fan Qinghui. A great teacher produces a great student. I admire you."
If one did not know about the long-standing antagonism between Cihang Jingzhai and the Yin Gui Sect, and the centuries-long struggle, one would probably think that Shi Feixuan's master, Fan Qinghui, and Zhu Yuyan were old friends.
This was the second time Xu Ziling had seen Zhu Yuyan, especially since she was no longer wearing a long dress and had undergone a metamorphosis. After a moment of stunned silence, he hurriedly invited the group to sit down.
The atmosphere immediately became awkward.
"Haha! Could it be the 'Empress of the Underworld' who scared me half to death last time? Ah! I'm sorry, I'm of a higher generation now, and we're related as uncle and sister-in-law."
Kou Zhong's carefree voice rang out from outside the window, instantly easing the awkward atmosphere.
Zhu Yuyan's face quickly flushed red, and after muttering "you little devil" under her breath, she lowered her head to sip her tea.
Yuan Yueze stared intently at Shi Feixuan and said, "When have I ever suppressed anyone from the Buddhist sect? Fairy Shi had better explain it to me clearly!"
The words "Fairy Shi" sounded far more awkward to Shi Feixuan than coming from Yuan Yueze's mouth. She pursed her lips slightly, about to speak.
“Oh! I remember now, after Luo Yan took over, she ordered all the monks in Luoyang to farm the land themselves. Is this what you mean by ‘suppressing Buddhism’?”
Yuan Yueze said in a strange tone.
Even Xu Ziling couldn’t take it anymore and quickly gave him a wink.
Shi Feixuan’s expression remained unchanged as she slowly said, “If you have important matters to attend to, Young Master, I will take my leave.”
After saying that, she got up to leave, but Kou Zhong quickly gave her a wink, and Xu Ziling saw her out.
Yuan Yueze then said to Kou Zhong, “My second brother sent word a few days ago that the situation in Guanzhong is chaotic, and it seems that the people of the Great Ming Zunjiao have set many traps. I will be setting off in a few days. I came out to pick up Yu Yan this time, and Zhenzhen specifically asked me to come and inform you on the way. After we arrive in Guanzhong, we should try to see each other as little as possible, so that outsiders know that our relationship is as strained as possible.”
Kou Zhong nodded absentmindedly.
After chatting for a few more minutes, Yuan Yueze and Kou Zhong got up to take their leave.
Walking along the main road leading to Luoyang, Zhu Yuyan said, "You have so much confidence in those two boys? Shi Feixuan's eloquence and personal charm are definitely not simple."
Yuan Yueze replied, "The problem is that I don't want to get involved in too many power struggles with them. They've seen a lot and have the ability to make their own choices and distinguish right from wrong."
Zhu Yuyan nodded, then said, "According to what you said, Yin Zuwen should also be colluding with foreign tribes. Qing'er said you promised to help her get revenge, so she asked me if she could come along."
Yuan Yueze slapped his forehead and said, "Oh dear, I completely forgot about that. If she's coming, I'll take her with me."
Zhu Yuyan gave Yuan Yueze a charmingly glaring look.
Yuan Yueze said fiercely, "If I hear you called 'you' again, I'll beat your buttocks to a pulp!"
Zhu Yuyan's face flushed red, and she quickly whispered "husband," before pushing away Yuan Yueze's groping hands and running forward.
A thousand miles of mountains and rivers, nine gates of the city. Without witnessing the grandeur of the imperial capital, how can one know the majesty of the emperor?
A treasure trove of cultural relics, a capital city for millennia. Chang'an is located on the south bank of the Wei River in the Guanzhong Plain, known as the "Eight Hundred Li Qin Plain." The Zhou, Qin, Han, Western Jin, Former Zhao, Former Qin, Later Qin, Western Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui, and Tang dynasties all established their capitals here.
To the south lies the Zhongnan Mountains, the central section of the Qinling Mountains, with their towering peaks and steep cliffs forming a natural barrier, creating a majestic scene of "peaks overlooking the
Wei River, green peaks piercing the distant sky." To the north, the Yaoshan, Huanglongshan, Cuo'eshan, and Liangshan mountains form the winding Northern Mountain Range, facing the Qinling Mountains in the distance. On the vast fertile plains demarcated by these mountains, the city of Chang'an stands majestically, surrounded by the Jing, Wei, Gui, Ba, Li, and Lao rivers, which flow like shimmering, swaying beads, forming the "Eight Rivers Surrounding Chang'an" landscape. These rivers, like lifelines, provided Chang'an with abundant water and vitality. Known as "the land of emperors since ancient times," Chang'an, with its advantageous strategic and economic conditions, has been favored by successive emperors since ancient times. Qin Shi
Huang, Ying Zheng, used it to quell the chaos of the Warring States period and establish a centralized, unified empire. During the Western Han Dynasty, Zhang Qian's two expeditions to the Western Regions opened the Silk Road from Chang'an, promoting economic and cultural exchange between East and West. Chang'an was elevated to an international city, a link between Chinese and foreign civilizations. Its grandeur was comparable only to Luoyang, the eastern capital.
After the establishment of the Sui Dynasty, a new capital was created, named Daxing. The Tang Dynasty continued to use Daxing as its capital, renaming it Chang'an, meaning "long-lasting peace and stability," and continuously expanded and renovated it, making it even more magnificent.
At the women's insistence, Yuan Yueze reluctantly surrendered, finally accepting the three carriages from the Sha family. He then led Zhu Yuyan, Shan Meixian, Xiao Bei, Song Yuzhi, Shang Xiuxun, Dugu Feng, Fu Junzhuo, Wei Zhenzhen, Yun Yuzhen, Bai Qing'er, and Xiao He'er on a journey that lasted half a month, finally arriving outside Chang'an at dusk that day.
Of the women, only Shen Luoyan, who couldn't come due to official duties, Song Yuhua (who was temporarily out of the public eye), Susu (who preferred quiet and decided to stay behind), and Yunzhi (who was already familiar with intelligence work) came along. Even Shang Xiuxun, who was originally staying at her parents' home, ran back, insisting on coming. Xiao He'er, who had sent someone to the northern frontier months earlier to search for her long-lost brother and harbored gratitude and admiration for Yuan Yueze, had also come after hearing that Xiaoqian was in Chang'an years ago.
Standing outside the Mingde Gate, the main gate of the city's south, Shan Meixian chuckled, "Husband, you've been harassed quite a bit these past
few days, haven't you? Do you feel a sense of relief now?" Recalling the days before his departure, Yuan Yueze was caught between several women: the ambiguous relationship with Ren Meimei, the bold and passionate fifth young lady of the Sha family, Sha Zhijing, the beautiful Linglong Jiao from Kucha, and
the unpredictable Zhang Chuchen. He also had to try to comfort the women left at home. His head throbbed again, and he nodded with a wry smile. Many soldiers on the city gate were secretly observing the luxurious carriage and the ethereal women below, secretly envying Yuan Yueze's good fortune.
Apart from Li Yuan and Qi Wang Li Yuanji, Yuan Yueze's sworn enemy, Crown Prince Li Jiancheng, Prince Qin Li Shimin, and Princess Pingyang Li Xiuning, brother and sister, led a large army to welcome him, creating a magnificent scene.
At the head of the welcoming procession, dressed in the crown prince's robes and resembling Li Shimin, was none other than Crown Prince Li Jiancheng of the Tang Dynasty. His stature was similar to Li Shimin's, though his face was longer and narrower, lacking Li Shimin's imposing righteousness. However, his eyes shone brightly, indicating he was no ordinary man. Li Shimin, on the other hand, seemed to be doing quite well,
his face radiant and his spirits high as he warmly greeted Yuan Yueze. After a few simple pleasantries and mutual greetings, Li Shimin specially arranged for Li Xiuning to accompany Yuan Yueze, while he and Li Jiancheng prepared lodgings for Yuan Yueze and his entourage. Li Xiuning was dressed simply, her face devoid of any makeup, her pallor almost frightening. Her shoulders were only covered by a cloak and cotton robe, further highlighting her extraordinary noble bearing and breathtaking beauty.
Aside from glancing at Yuan Yueze's wives, Li Xiuning only managed a weak smile at Yuan Yueze, never uttering a word.
A large crowd of residents had already gathered on the street, eager to see this extraordinary man who had shaken the world and his supposedly beautiful and elegant wives. None of the women wore veils, so the common people were initially stunned by their sight. Upon regaining their senses, everyone inwardly gave them a thumbs-up.
Chang'an, the capital of the Sui and Tang dynasties, consisted of three parts: the outer city wall, the palace city, and the imperial city. The palace city and the imperial city were located in the central northern part of the capital, while the wards within the outer city wall protected them from the left, right, and south. The central Zhuque Avenue served as the boundary, dividing the city into Wannian and Chang'an counties to the east and west
, respectively. The palace city and the imperial city were the residences of the Tang imperial family, while the outer city wall was where ordinary people lived, each with its own layout.
Hundreds of houses resembled a chessboard, and twelve streets resembled vegetable fields.
The outer city wall of Chang'an had eleven north-south main streets and fourteen east-west main streets, crisscrossing and dividing the city into one hundred and ten wards. The three north-south avenues and three east-west avenues running through the city gates formed the main traffic arteries of Chang'an. The widest of these was Zhuque Avenue, comparable to the Heavenly Street of Luoyang, reaching a width of forty zhang (approximately 33 meters). While the others were not as wide as Zhuque Avenue, their scale was still considerable.
Besides Zhuque Avenue, Chang'an's most famous markets were the Metropolitan Market and Liren Market, located southeast and southwest of the imperial city, each occupying two wards. Each market had four streets, forming a crisscrossing "well" shape, dividing the entire city into nine districts. Each district faced four streets, with shops of various trades lining the streets. Within each district, there were also smaller alleyways for internal passage. The two markets were the busiest areas of Chang'an, with many restaurants and eateries operating all night, making them the city's vibrant, sleepless nights.
Several years ago, Yuan Yueze had come to see the Yang Gong Treasure Treasury, but hadn't even been in the mood to admire it. This time, however, it was different. He smiled and gestured to the people along the way, appreciating the extraordinary and powerful atmosphere of this capital city at its peak.
Yuan Yueze suddenly asked, "Where are we staying? Is it Xiu Ning's temporary palace?"
Li Xiu Ning, who had been lost in thought, suddenly blushed, shook her head, and whispered, "Second Brother arranged for you to stay at 'Lingyan Pavilion.'"
Yuan Yueze nodded, ignoring the jealous Shang Xiuxun who was secretly 'gently' massaging his lower back, and said to Li Xiu Ning, "Xiuning, are you alright? Should I 'check' you out? Ouch!"
Shang Xiuxun finally got serious.
Giving Shang Xiuxun a meaningful look, Li Xiu Ning politely replied and remained silent.
Walking along Zhuque Avenue to its end, they arrived at the Zhuque Gate late at night. An elderly eunuch was waiting for them, seemingly sent by Li Shimin to lead them to Lingyan Pavilion within the Taiji Palace.
The old man's eyes seemed listless and dull, showing no change in their gaze, as if utterly indifferent to everything in the world. They appeared not to be living beings, but merely eyes used to fill the black holes in their sockets. In the brief moment of bowing, his gaze swept over Yuan Yueze and his companions, pausing briefly on Zhu Yuyan before he respectfully bowed and said, "This old servant, Wei Lianxiang, has come by order of the Emperor to guide the Princess, Young Master Yuan, and the ladies."
This man was Wei Lianxiang, Zhu Yuyan's senior brother and the most secretive elder of the Yin Gui Sect, who had been hiding in the deep palace for many years.
Yuan Yueze didn't give him much of a look, and the group entered the entrance of Lingyan Pavilion in a grand procession.
The Lingyan Pavilion under the moonlight presented a completely different scene, making one appreciate the designer's skillful use of natural features and the clever borrowing of scenery. As a garden pavilion, it evoked the intoxicating feeling of 'though made by man, it seems to have been created by nature.' From a distance, the pavilions appear and disappear among the trees, like a mirage, subtly veiled and arranged. Long bridges, streams, artificial hills, and skillfully arranged flowers—winter plum, banana trees, wisteria, and osmanthus—are meticulously arranged in the garden, creating a harmonious blend of elegance and sophistication, captivating the senses.
Led by Wei Lianxiang, the long corridor twists and turns, and the expansive Lingyan Pond comes into view, leaving Yuan Yueze and his party speechless with awe.
Flying pavilions, vermilion walls, and ancient pines dripping with verdant green.
Lingyan Pavilion is not a single building, but a complex of structures built around Lingyan Pond. Each building is surrounded by towers, halls, pavilions, and galleries, creating a scene within a scene. Ancient pines are planted throughout the pond. The
main pavilion, located south of the pond, is a two-story wooden structure with vermilion doors and windows, flying eaves and tiled roofs, painted beams and carved pillars—elegant yet simple, possessing an extraordinary grandeur.
The group strolled along the long corridor through the garden west of the main pavilion, leading directly to Lingyan Pond. The interconnected pavilions and arched stone bridges in the center of the pond are uniquely designed. From south to north, small arches and large arches are arranged, then connected to each other, creating a rhythmic and harmonious effect. Fifteen intricately carved balusters stand on each side of the bridge, which extends straight into the lake, like a shortcut to a fairyland on the other side.
The Lingyan Pavilion's garden design is unconventional, with tributaries of the pond winding through the gardens and pavilions, forming streams and springs. Waterside corridors with latticed windows connect the interior and exterior without obstructing the view.
The reflections of trees, flowers, clouds, and the moon in the main lake's clear waters, along with the ripples created by swimming fish, form a dreamlike and enchanting scene. The pavilions, the misty pond, and the surrounding landscape complement each other, connected by covered bridges to form an inseparable whole.
Amidst this picturesque scene, three colorful lanterns hung at each of the four corners of the square pavilion in the center of the pond. Dozens of thick, soft, pure white carpets were laid out on the platform beside the pavilion, forming a large rug that transformed the cold, hard brick platform into a comfortable place to sit
or lie down. Giant futons were placed on the rugs, offering pillows and support, making one feel that once lying down, one would fall into a long sleep and never want to get up. Dozens of women in plain clothes, divided into two groups, were either playing musical instruments or singing and dancing, adorning the strange world in the center of the lake with color and fragrance, adding to the mysterious atmosphere of the moonlit night.
Inside the pavilion, a large round stone table, capable of seating dozens of people, had a large vase in the center, filled with unknown red flowers, exuding the scent of early spring in the mountains. Around it were dozens of dishes and wines, their aromas wafting through the air. Li Jiancheng and Li Shimin were sitting and chatting when they saw Yuan Yueze and his entourage arrive, and they rose to greet them.
The moment Li Shimin arrived before Yuan Yueze, the music ended, its lingering notes still echoing in the starry sky above the platform.
"Please take your seats," Li Jiancheng said, barely suppressing his desire to stare at Zhu Yuyan and Shang Xiuxun. Raising his cup, he said, "Today I finally see a man as renowned as Brother Yuan, and I know the rumors are not exaggerated at all. And you ladies are like celestial beings descended from heaven. Please drink this cup."
Bai Qing'er and Xiao He'er, unwittingly included among Yuan Yueze's wives, felt somewhat embarrassed but said nothing, only silently drinking.
Li Shimin glanced at the bowed Li Xiuning, then quickly swept his gaze across the elegant and aloof Zhu Yuyan, saying, "Brother Yuan, have you heard of the return of the 'Overlord Blade' Yue Shan, who was famous throughout northern Shaanxi decades ago?"
A glint flashed in Zhu Yuyan's eyes, and the surrounding air seemed to suddenly freeze.
Yuan Yueze patted her shoulder lightly and smiled at Li Shimin, "Brother Shimin, why do you ask such a question?"
He had wanted to mention that he had been to Chengdu, and that Yue Shan had also appeared there, but then he remembered that Li Yuanji's arm had been crippled in Chengdu, and mentioning it would inevitably make everyone feel awkward.
Li Shimin glanced at Zhu Yuyan, who had regained her composure, and said, "I heard that he came to Chang'an a few days ago to avenge the loss of his meridians in Chengdu."
Yuan Yueze looked at Zhu Yuyan and asked in surprise, "It is said that his martial arts are very high. Who could have crippled his meridians?"
After carefully observing Yuan Yueze's every expression, Li Shimin and Li Jiancheng said, "It is said that it was done by the sect leader's uncle..."
Zhu Yuyan smiled slightly and said, "I am no longer the sect leader of the Yin Gui Sect. Prince Qin, please do not address me as such."
Li Shimin smiled awkwardly. The matter of Zhu Yuyan passing on her position had already caused a sensation in the martial arts world, but Li Shimin couldn't find a suitable way to address her, simply because the generational hierarchy in Yuan Yueze's family was too chaotic.
Zhu Yuyan gave another cold laugh and said, "Yue Shan, very well, I was just thinking of seeing him."
Li Jiancheng and Li Shimin felt a chill run down their spines, feeling that perhaps no one in the world could rival the beautiful woman sitting so gracefully opposite them
. Bai Qing'er glanced at Yuan Yueze and Zhu Yuyan with a complicated expression, thinking to herself that Shi Zun would marry the same man as her granddaughter; even in the Holy Sect, which values true feelings, such a thing would probably be a once-in-a-millennium occurrence. Then she thought, why am I thinking about such things? The purpose of this trip is simply to avenge my great enemy, and that's enough. What should I do after I've avenged him?
While Bai Qing'er was lost in thought, the atmosphere at the banquet table became lively.
Looking at Li Jiancheng's cunning and smug eyes, Yuan Yueze was completely puzzled: what had happened to make him so happy?
Li Shimin, however, calmly exchanged toasts with Yuan Yueze, and finally even put his arm around Yuan Yueze's shoulder to toast each other, as if they were old friends.
The banquet ended close to midnight.
After seeing off the half-drunk Li siblings, Yuan Yueze and the women began their revelry. Shang Xiuxun, who hadn't been close to Yuan Yueze for months, surprisingly lasted for over half an hour before finally falling asleep, satisfied as a limp rag.
By the end of the hour of Chou (1-3 AM), the women, exhausted from the revelry, were all fast asleep.
Only then did Yuan Yueze sneak into Zhu Yuyan's room, which wasn't far away. Their group occupied four rooms: one for Yuan Yueze and the women, and one each for Zhu Yuyan, Bai Qing'er, and Xiao He'er.
Although Zhu Yuyan was a leading figure in the Demonic Sect, her nature was more conservative than Yuan Yueze could have imagined. Fortunately, under the influence of the Demonic Seed Technique, she had gradually opened her heart.
So-called conservatives are rare; many are merely suppressing their physical urges and desires through extraordinary willpower.
As he tiptoed into the room in the dark, a faint, almost imperceptible, disordered breathing within the silk curtains caught Yuan Yueze's attention.
Shedding his cloak, Yuan Yueze climbed naked onto the bed, slipping into the covers like an eel, and embraced Zhu Yuyan's shapely, hot body as she pretended to be asleep.
She was only wearing a thin undergarment. Before she could protest, Yuan Yueze used both hands and mouth to strip this beauty, whose sensitive spots had been thoroughly explored over the months, completely naked, and began to tease her. He deeply aroused her desire and passion.
With her three points attacked simultaneously by her beloved man, Zhu Yuyan, whose lust had been overflowing after listening to his 'enchanting music' for several hours, suddenly had her suppressed desire reignite. She took the initiative, offering him kisses, her body twisting and rubbing against him, seeking even greater pleasure.
After a soft gasp, the empty, slippery sacred space was finally completely filled, and that familiar feeling of satisfaction surged into her heart. Zhu Yuyan whispered in Yuan Yueze's ear, "Be gentle, Qing'er is right next door."
"Hehe!"
Yuan Yueze chuckled mischievously. His intuition told Zhu Yuyan that something bad was about to happen, and his mind suddenly went blank.
Yuan Yueze pulled her onto his body and began to thrust wildly beneath her.
Zhu Yuyan felt as if her soul was soaring to the heavens, and she cried out repeatedly. A sliver of clarity in her mind kept reminding her: her disciple was right next door, and such loud cries would surely be heard by Bai Qing'er. The more she did this, the less she could control her loud moans. Bai Qing'er not only failed to restrain her, but instead gave her a strange excitement. Just like that day, even knowing Wanwan was next door, she still called out passionately. While there was some stimulation involved, it was mostly the feeling of Yuan Yueze's deep attachment to her. When engaging in the deepest level of spiritual and physical exchange, the brain would react appropriately.
Zhu Yuyan, rising and falling on Yuan Yueze's body, moaning softly, every expression was so captivating.
Having reached the peak of her soul several times, Zhu Yuyan and Yuan Yueze finally let out a hysterical scream at the same time. Their limbs intertwined as if they were born to be inseparable, their bodies and minds united. A strange true energy, a fusion of unpredictable demonic seed and unwavering Dao embryo, slowly flowed through their meridians along their tightly connected point. After several large cycles, it dispersed and flowed into their respective Niwan Palaces.
After the strange, indistinguishable demonic energy completed its journey through Yuan Yueze's meridians, he knew that the deathly energy had been completely transformed into his own true energy, and he had fully recovered his former power. When that true energy entered Zhu Yuyan's Niwan Palace (a point on the back of her head), due to its dual nature of demonic and demonic energy, it perfectly merged into Zhu Yuyan's demonic seed within her Niwan Palace. Because this true energy not only possessed the properties of a Dao embryo but also contained the unbridled affection and love between the two, it gave rise to a strong Dao embryo characteristic within the demonic seed.
At this moment, the demonic seed and the Dao embryo were no longer distinct, yet clearly differentiated. Just as Xiang Yutian had predicted, Zhu Yuyan finally achieved the first-ever 'merging of Dao and Demon' in history. That is, Dao and Demon flowed together, both unified and separate. Zhu Yuyan felt that the Dao and Demonic energies within her body were like yin and yang, positive and negative, circulating endlessly, forming a perfect Tai Chi.
When she opened her hazy, beautiful eyes, she was met with Yuan Yueze's deep, clear gaze, which met her surprised expression. He too had become a beneficiary of the 'merging of Dao and Demon,' although he did not practice the Demon Seed Technique, the phenomenon of Dao embryos and demonic energy flowing together and merging within his body still appeared.
Zhu Yuyan forgot her shyness and said happily, "Husband, is this the 'merger of Tao and Demon' you mentioned? It feels so wonderful, indescribable."
Yuan Yueze gently stroked her pert, round buttocks, which were covered in fragrant sweat, and gently pulled away, saying, "Hmm, I think it must be."
Zhu Yuyan, relying on her profound skill, endured wave after wave of pleasure, already reaching her limit. She let out a soft hum and changed the subject, saying, "We've finally arrived in Chang'an. I wonder what encounters we'll have these days. Tonight, seeing Li Jiancheng's sinister expression, I felt something was off, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it." As
Yuan Yueze's attention was diverted, his previously surging desire gradually subsided. Feeling the 'huge thing' inside her begin to shrink, Zhu Yuyan breathed a sigh of relief.
After pondering for a moment, Yuan Yueze said, "As long as we find out who the other Holy Envoy of the Great Ming Sect is, nothing else matters. My second brother should be secretly coming over in the next few days, and I'll discuss it with him again."
Zhu Yuyan nodded and said, "Senior Brother Wei has already left a mark on me. I'll go see him tomorrow. He's been lurking in the palace for many years; he should have some clues."
Yuan Yueze nodded and teased, "Yuyan, why don't you go with them?"
Zhu Yuyan's already flushed face turned bright red again, and she stammered, "Hmph! I won't play along with your nonsense!"
After a pause, she asked in a low voice as if possessed, "Wouldn't it be awkward to go with you... with you...?"
Yuan Yueze chuckled dryly, "You'll have to ask them that question."
Hearing his shameless words, the feeling of shyness and excitement surged into Zhu Yuyan's heart again. She lightly bit Yuan Yueze's chest with her pearly teeth and slowly fell asleep on him.
Suddenly, a series of rapid, suppressed breaths came from next door. Yuan Yueze chuckled mischievously and coughed heavily.
Within a radius of ten feet, only the sound of long, drawn-out breathing remained.

Chapter 79: Mysterious and Unpredictable.
Yuan Yueze opened his eyes and saw Xiao He'er, dressed in her finest attire, sitting at a delicate little table in front of the bed, her large, bright eyes staring intently at his handsome face.
Subconsciously touching his face, Yuan Yueze sat up, stretched, and saw that it was already bright outside. Zhu Yuyan, who had shared a passionate encounter with him last night and had mastered her demonic arts, was nowhere to be seen. So he smiled and said, "Why are you looking at me like that, little sister?"
In the past few months, Xiao He'er had always been clinging to him, and he had regarded her as his own sister, so the two addressed each other as brother and sister. However, due to the protests of another jealous woman, Dugu Feng, Xiao He'er was not allowed to call him 'big brother,' but had to call him 'Big Brother Yuan.'
Xiao He'er snapped out of her daze and saw Yuan Yueze's bare, though not strong, but extremely beautiful upper body. Her little face flushed crimson, looking incredibly cute. She turned around and said, "I came to call Brother Yuan. The Emperor wants Brother Yuan and Sister Yuzhi to attend the morning court session to thank Brother Yuan for his contributions to the people of Guanzhong in front of all the civil and military officials."
Yuan Yueze thought for a moment before understanding.
A year before the wedding, the Song family, under the name of Song Yu Zongzhi, opened a trading company called 'Yu Xinglong' in Chang'an, mainly engaged in the sale of sea salt. In just a few years, 'Yu Xinglong' quickly gained a reputation for high-quality, reasonably priced sea salt, thanks to the Song family's advantages. This was partly due to the fact that the established salt merchants in Guanzhong all wanted to hoard and speculate, making huge profits, which 'Yu Xinglong' took advantage of. Under Li Tang's intelligence network, it was easy to uncover the forces behind "Yu Xinglong." Knowing that Song Yuzhi and Yuan Yueze were supporting them, many power-hungry salt merchants dared not openly plot against "Yu Xinglong," resorting only to underhanded tactics. This year, the harvest in Guanzhong was poor due to weather conditions, but "Yu Xinglong" distributed thousands of kilograms of high-quality sea salt free of charge to help the people through the crisis, further enhancing its image and influence among the people of Guanzhong.
As for Li Yuan inviting Yuan Yueze to the morning court, it was probably not as simple as he claimed, just to express gratitude.
Yuan Yueze thought to himself.
He then jumped off the bed to get dressed.
Little He'er, who had just turned around, saw the naked Yuan Yueze and immediately screamed, staggering out of the room.
Yuan Yueze shook his head and chuckled, secretly thinking that he had been too casual and had frightened the little girl.
He quickly dressed and went to another bedroom, where he saw that, apart from Shan Meixian, the other women were still fast asleep on the large bed. Their breasts and buttocks were undulating, their flesh glistening, making Yuan Yueze feel dizzy.
Shan Meixian, having finished washing up, came out from the inner room and chuckled, "Sisters, after being tormented like this, does husband feel a sense of accomplishment?"
Yuan Yueze laughed and said, "That's not my style."
As he spoke, the other women also woke up.
After a few brief words, Shan Meixian said, "At this time, it should be Master Wei's free time. Mother must have gone to see him. Today's court assembly will definitely not be simple. When Zhizhi accompanies her husband, she must be careful what she says."
Sleepy-eyed Song Yuzhi yawned, then collapsed onto Yun Yuzhen's lap, exclaiming, "I don't want to go! Sister Meixian has seen it all, you go!"
Shan Meixian helplessly pouted and nodded, "In that case, I'll go with Junzhuo. Yuzhen will accompany you to 'Yuxinglong' for a look."
Song Yuzhi nodded hastily.
The three arrived at the front hall, where Princess Li Xiuning of the Li Tang Dynasty had personally come to greet them.
She still looked as lifeless as ever, which made Yuan Yueze feel inexplicably irritated.
After a simple bow, she explained that Song Yuzhi had gone to 'Yuxinglong' to visit her subordinates and therefore could not come. The group then followed Li Xiuning out of 'Lingyan Pavilion'.
The Lingyan Pavilion was located next to the Sanqing Hall within the Imperial Palace, very close to their destination. The group remained silent the entire way.
Suddenly, Shan Meixian asked, "The morning court session should be long over, right?"
The morning court session usually took place at the beginning of the Yin hour (3-5 AM), but it was already bright outside, hence Shan Meixian's question.
Li Xiuning nodded, "It's Father, several elder brothers, and important officials who want to personally thank you, young master. The ceremony is similar to the morning court session."
The others suddenly understood.
A short while later, they followed Li Xiuning to a luxurious VIP hall some distance from the Taiji Palace. They saw imperial guards everywhere, all carefully selected, each burly and imposing. Li Yuanji, whose arm had been crippled by Yuan Yueze in Chengdu, led a group of people standing at the head of the welcoming procession, smiling amicably at Yuan Yueze.
"Brother Yuan, you've had a long journey. This prince, on behalf of Father, welcomes your family to Guanzhong," Li Yuanji said quickly, raising his left hand in a handshake gesture.
Seeing the surprise flash in Yuan Yueze's eyes, Li Yuanji smugly tightened their clasped hands and whispered, "Thank you for your kindness, Brother Yuan. I will never forget this favor."
His smiling demeanor was completely at odds with the sinister words Yuan Yueze heard, but Yuan Yueze smiled casually, said "Thank you," and followed him across the threshold into the hall.
A row of windows on the north side of the hall offered views of a snow-covered garden. Near the windows were a dozen or so armchairs, separated by tea tables. Seated in the center was a man in plain blue robes, with snow-white skin and handsome features, appearing to be only in his thirties. But it was obvious he was none other than Li Yuan, the supreme ruler of the Tang Dynasty and the highest leader of the Li clan. This was not only due to his position, but also because the Crown Prince Li Jiancheng, Prince Qin Li Shimin, and other high-ranking officials, all standing around him in their magnificent robes, perfectly highlighting his exalted status.
Li Yuan's expression was somewhat dejected, but beneath his thick eyebrows, his eyes remained bright and clear, revealing a rather indescribable longing and pursuit of certain beautiful things. Even seated, his back remained straight and firm, making his imposing physique even more imposing. He exuded extraordinary charm. The head of a clan was indeed a man of extraordinary bearing. Upon
seeing Yuan Yueze, Li Yuan's eyes lit up, and when he looked at the elegant and graceful Shan Meixian, his steady hand holding the teacup visibly trembled.
Li Yuanji and Li Xiuning were the first to bow and then stood beside Li Jiancheng and Li Shimin. The three of them, including Yuan Yueze, did not perform a grand ceremony, but simply cupped their hands and said, "Greetings, Your Majesty."
Although this was extremely impolite, for the rumored Yuan Yueze, this action was already unexpected. In addition, in the eyes of outsiders, he was a regional overlord, and his status was equal to Li Yuan's, so the surrounding high officials did not react much.
Li Yuan's loss of composure was only momentary. He quickly put down his teacup with an elegant demeanor and said calmly, "Young master, you are too kind. In terms of seniority, I and your wife are of the same generation. You are a distinguished guest of our Great Tang Dynasty, so there is no need for such formalities in the future."
Yuan Yueze chuckled inwardly. Talking about seniority with him was simply laughable. If it were Zhu Yuyan's turn, wouldn't he be Li Yuan's elder? However, his expression remained unchanged as he said, "Thank you for your understanding, Your Majesty. I am used to being casual and have offended you in many ways. Please forgive me."
The three of them were invited to sit opposite Li Yuan, while the rest of the group remained standing with their heads bowed beside him.
Li Yuan said solemnly, "Your Excellency's governance of Luoyang is admired by all, and all your actions are for the benefit of the people. In this respect, I am ashamed to admit my inferiority."
Yuan Yueze smiled and said, "These are merely matters of personal habits. Your Majesty's approach is acceptable. After all, a leader must maintain dignity."
Li Yuanji interjected, "Brother Yuan is our role model. My second brother once said that Brother Yuan's way of doing things is more powerful without being stern, and the people genuinely love and respect you."
This was tantamount to subtly criticizing Li Shimin, seemingly reminding him that his relationship with Yuan Yueze was not simple and that Li Yuan should be careful.
Li Yuan's brows furrowed at first, then relaxed. Yuan Yueze, however, said solemnly, "Please forgive my rudeness. I never interfere in the military and political affairs of Luoyang, because I know my own limitations. Please do not attribute my wife Luoyan's achievements to me."
He then gave the two women, Shan Meixian and Yuan Yueze, who had made significant contributions, a grateful look.
The two women smiled sweetly, making Li Jiancheng, who was already losing control, almost pop his eyes out.
Li Yuan laughed loudly, saying, "There are few people in the world as carefree as you, young master."
Before Yuan Yueze could be polite, an official beside Li Yuan, wearing a ceremonial hat and blue official robes, with a long face and five strands of beard, and looking between forty and fifty years old, spoke up, "This humble official would like to ask young master Yuan, is your family feeling unwell today?"
He stared at Yuan Yueze with fierce eyes, his cultivation seemed to be quite high, and his words were even more impolite.
Yuan Yueze was taken aback and asked, "Why does this official ask such a question? My whole family is in good health, without the slightest discomfort."
Li Yuan glanced sharply at the official, then turned to Yuan Yueze and said apologetically, "Young master, please don't take offense. This is my trusted minister, Feng Deyi of the Ministry of Personnel. Minister Feng did not intend to offend you, it's just... sigh!" Fu Junzhuo
wrinkled her delicate nose, a hint of murderous intent flashing in her beautiful eyes. Shan Meixian, however, said in a clear and melodious voice, "Your Majesty, please speak frankly."
Everyone saw that Shan Meixian, a mere woman, dared to interrupt in such a situation, and Yuan Yueze showed no unusual expression. They immediately understood that this woman, once famous in the martial arts world and the leader of a sect, must hold a high position in Yuan Yueze's family.
In fact, little did they know that there was no distinction between superiors and inferiors in Yuan Yueze's family.
Li Yuan had known Shan Meixian for many years and seemed to have some special feelings for her, but now, the woman who had regained her youthful beauty was clearly a stranger to him. After a bitter smile, Li Yuan said, "This morning after the court session, all the women in the palace fainted after breakfast. When they woke up, they were suffering from alternating chills and fever, in great pain."
Yuan Yueze and the others listened silently.
Li Shimin interjected, "Father's concubines are weak, and Father is saddened..."
Yuan Yueze was completely confused, thinking to himself, what does this have to do with me?
Seeing the puzzled looks on their faces, an official in his forties, tall and slender, with a scholarly air, stood to Li Yuan's other side and said, "The entire palace's water supply comes from the artificial channels beside the Lingyan Pavilion, and there's nothing unusual about the men who have eaten breakfast in the palace..."
Li Yuan pointed to the official and said, "This is Minister Pei Ji, whose 'Forgetful Fan' can summon heroes from all over the world, and he's also my chess partner."
Although Pei Ji didn't say it explicitly, Yuan Yueze understood: they simply suspected that he had tampered with the water. Such a method of poisoning people based on gender was indeed not something an ordinary person could do. Moreover, this happened on the second day after Yuan Yueze's family moved into the Lingyan Pavilion. More importantly, Yuan Yueze never used servants. Even on the way to Chang'an, he, Fu Junzhuo, and Yun Yuzhen personally drove the carriage. After checking into Lingyan Pavilion, all the servants sent by Li Tang were sent back to their rooms to rest. This was the most suspicious point, because no outsider knew what Yuan Yueze had done last night. Although the two sides were at peace at the moment, everyone knew that one day a victor would emerge. The victor would gain the world, and the loser would suffer the destruction of their family. Therefore, Yuan Yueze did indeed have a motive to poison them. After letting out
a series of light laughs, Shan Meixian calmly said, "This matter was definitely not done by my husband. However, I have a close female friend who is skilled in medicine. She can treat those poisoned in the palace."
Li Yuan was overjoyed and said, "Thank you for your trouble, Madam. Consort Lian, Consort Yin, and Consort Zhang can be saved."
Yuan Yueze frowned, really wanting to shout, "Your consorts are human, but the palace maids aren't?"
Li Shimin clearly misunderstood him, thinking he was unhappy about being suspected, and quickly said, "Brother Yuan, please don't blame me. I also believe that you wouldn't resort to such despicable means; someone must be pulling the strings behind the scenes."
Li Jiancheng also chimed in, "If this is your first time in Chang'an, please feel free to go out and enjoy yourself. I have already ordered the 'Changlin Army' to protect you and your wives. Father has decided to host a welcome dinner for you and your family at the 'Taiji Palace' three days from now."
To expand his power, Li Jiancheng recruited two thousand warriors from Chang'an and the surrounding areas to serve as "Eastern Palace Guards," stationed at the left and right Changlin Gates, hence the name "Changlin Soldiers."
After a few more pleasantries, Yuan Yueze, accompanied by his two elegant and aloof wives, walked out of the VIP hall under the escort of the smiling but treacherous Li Yuanji.
Due to the complex and strict rules within the palace, Yuan Yueze, who had initially intended to stroll around, lost interest in the presence of numerous guards with their weapons. Furthermore, Shan Meixian needed to inform Wei Zhenzhen, who was dedicated to medical research, to go to the inner palace to treat the poisoned women. Therefore, the three hurriedly returned to Lingyan Pavilion.
It was obvious that someone was plotting against Yuan Yueze's family.
Entering the small reception room in the west wing, they saw Zhu Yuyan half-sitting, half-reclining, reading a book, while Bai Qing'er sat upright beside her, idly flipping through another book.
Seeing Yuan Yueze enter alone, Bai Qing'er blushed and immediately lowered her head. To avoid losing face in front of her disciple, Zhu Yuyan gave Yuan Yueze a meaningful look, signaling him to be mindful of his behavior.
Having been taken advantage of by Yuan Yueze in front of her disciple, Zhu Yuyan suppressed her embarrassment, glanced at the timid Bai Qing'er, and said in a trembling voice, "I just went to see my senior brother and got some information from him."
Yuan Yueze quickly stopped reading, waiting for her to continue.
Zhu Yuyan stepped aside, calming herself down before saying, "My senior brother was initially unconvinced by you, but over the years he's been intimidated by me. He said there's almost nothing suspicious about the palace, and many ministers are unpredictable on the surface, so it's hard to say who the Great Ming Sect's people really are."
Yuan Yueze coldly snorted, "Tell your senior brother that if he's not convinced, he should take a hit from my sword. If he survives, I, Yuan, will personally cut off my head and send it to him!"
Bai Qing'er raised her head, gazing at the exceptionally charming man before her. Just a moment ago, he was so composed, but now he was arrogant and domineering to the point of being unmatched. This arrogance wasn't just talk; it was backed by absolute strength. She had only just heard Zhu Yuyan mention Wei Lianxiang. As Zhu Yuyan's senior brother, how could his abilities be mediocre? But Yuan Yueze's words made it difficult for Bai Qing'er to doubt him; she blindly believed that Yuan Yueze's words were absolutely true.
Zhu Yuyan rolled her eyes at him and said, "Senior brother is stubborn, so don't be silly. According to him, the most suspicious person in the palace recently is Consort Lian, Li Yuan's new concubine. This Consort Lian is from a foreign land. She was originally a prisoner rescued by Li Shimin in the chaos of the army after his great victory over Western Qin. It is said that she is as beautiful as a celestial being, and her temperament is both otherworldly and untamed. Even Xue Ju was moved by her, but dared not force himself on her and kept her. Later, Li Shimin presented her to Li Yuan. However, once Consort Lian arrived at the palace, she forgot about Li Shimin who saved her and instead supported Crown Prince Li Jiancheng."
Yuan Yueze laughed and said, "Speaking of celestial beings, who can compare to our Yuyan?"
Zhu Yuyan was obviously very pleased, but still glared at him. Bai Qing'er, who was standing to the side, nodded hurriedly, which showed that the reborn Zhu Yuyan was indeed as Yuan Yueze said.
Zhu Yuyan continued, "Senior Brother also said that ever since Song Shidao disguised himself as 'Yue Shan' and entered the pass a while ago, Li Yuan has been sending people to search for Yue Shan. However, Song Shidao deliberately concealed his whereabouts, so Li Yuan often showed a melancholy and nostalgic expression in front of Senior Brother."
Decades ago, Li Yuan and Yue Shan fought side by side, experiencing life and death dangers, and finally annihilated the bandit group led by "Little Whirlwind" Ma Jun that was ravaging the northern border. The two were naturally very close, but because they both secretly loved Bi Xiuxin, and because the unruly Yue Shan did not appreciate the indecisive personality of Li Yuan, he actually hated Li Yuan.
Having thought it through, Yuan Yueze sighed, "Now we'll see how Second Brother puts on his act. He's too mysterious; he never even comes to see us."
Bai Qing'er giggled and interjected, "We only arrived last night; the news couldn't have spread that fast, could it?"
Yuan Yueze coughed and stared intently at Bai Qing'er's slightly red and swollen eyes, saying, "Miss Qing'er, you should take care of yourself. Oh dear!"
Zhu Yuyan knew he wouldn't say anything nice, and upon hearing this, she pinched him hard under the table.
Recalling last night's events, both Zhu Yuyan, who was experiencing ecstasy, and Bai Qing'er, who was listening intently, looked embarrassed.
Zhu Yuyan suddenly said, "If my husband can eliminate Yin Zuwen and the cult behind him, it will not only greatly help the Holy Sect in the future, but it will also be a way of doing something for Qing'er. Alas, thinking back, I really feel sorry for Qing'er."
Bai Qing'er stared at Zhu Yuyan in astonishment; she never dreamed that Zhu Yuyan would apologize to her. Since becoming Zhu Yuyan's second disciple, a position envied by everyone, Bai Qing'er's life has been far less glamorous than it appears. With her cunning and resourcefulness, she believes herself far more capable of leading the Yin Gui Sect than her easily swayed senior sister. However, Zhu Yuyan is undeniably biased, harboring some resentment towards her. Hearing this apology today, all her hatred vanished. Zhu Yuyan had undergone two transformations in a short period, both physically and mentally, a change that the observant Bai Qing'er had witnessed firsthand. Yet, she had never expected Zhu Yuyan to think highly of her; it was a deeply ingrained belief formed over a long period.
Taking Bai Qing'er's trembling hand, Zhu Yuyan said, "If Qing'er also likes him, then go for it yourself. Don't overthink it."
Bai Qing'er's face flushed crimson, and she lowered her head, bewildered.
Judging from her actions alone, it was clear she too had developed feelings for Yuan Yueze. Thinking about it, it makes sense. If she hadn't seen this, how could Zhu Yuyan, with her incredibly rich life experience, have said those words? Her words surprised and embarrassed Yuan Yueze. He was surprised because Zhu Yuyan's heart had been changing over the past few months, becoming more true to herself and facing her inner self. She had transformed from conservative to open-minded. After achieving the 'Convergence of Dao and Demon' last night, her strength had broken through to the Celestial Realm. Perhaps even the formidable Yuan Yueze wouldn't dare boast that he could definitely defeat her. The 'Convergence of Dao and Demon' had also greatly changed Zhu Yuyan's state of mind, and her words today were the best proof of that.
Zhu Yuyan then said to Bai Qing'er, "I originally intended to betroth you to my husband, but thinking about all the books I've read over the years, which say that everyone should fight for their own love, I'll give you that right. What do you think?"
The usually ruthless Bai Qing'er shed two lines of tears, nodded happily, and then buried her face in Zhu Yuyan's arms.
"Junior Sister, have you also been entangled with this nemesis?"
A familiar, captivating voice rang out, accompanied by a delicate fragrance. The alluring Wanwan drifted in through the window.
Even in the dead of winter, she was still dressed in her familiar attire; the thin, white palace gauze could barely conceal her curvaceous figure, and her bare, jade-like feet made one wonder if she was even afraid of the cold.
Clearly sensing the significant progress in Zhu Yuyan and Yuan Yueze's cultivation, a hint of surprise flashed in Wanwan's eyes. After bowing to Zhu Yuyan, she sat down beside her, her defiant gaze meeting Yuan Yueze's wandering eyes, which were feasting on her beauty.
Bai Qing'er, accustomed to years of open and covert rivalry with Wanwan, sat up and retorted, "Senior Sister, you're so busy, yet you still managed to sneak into the palace. Could it be that you're already hopelessly
infatuated with the young master?" Wanwan stared at Yuan Yueze with a half-smile, replying irrelevantly, "Junior Sister has actually fallen for this rascal long ago. I feel even Uncle Ting seems to have fallen for him!"
Zhu Yuyan sighed deeply, saying helplessly, "We, master and disciple, are truly pitiful, both destined to be ruined by him. Junior Sister, with your temperament, has actually managed to restrain yourself. Last time I was wondering why her 'Charming Maiden Heart Technique' had regressed..." It turned out that the unfulfilled desires of self-cultivation had backfired.
Looking at the three stunningly beautiful masters and disciples before him, Yuan Yueze said with dissatisfaction, "Besides having more wives at home, what's wrong with me? Besides, aren't I sincere with each of them? Is it really necessary to use a word like 'defile'?"
Wanwan retorted with a huff, "You're stupid, lazy, and slow-witted—are those advantages?"
Enraged, Yuan Yueze struck like lightning. Even Wanwan, who had cultivated the eighteenth level of the Heavenly Demon Technique with Shan Meixian's help, couldn't withstand his attack. She was pulled into Yuan Yueze's arms, his hands roaming freely.
Zhu Yuyan and Bai Qing'er, though somewhat accustomed to his absurd behavior, still secretly cursed him.
Being humiliated in front of her master and junior sister was unbearable even for the bold Wanwan. She hurriedly pleaded, her breath coming in short gasps, "Wanwan knows she was wrong. If you don't let go, I won't tell you anything!"
After freeing herself, Wanwan calmed down and said, "I met Young Master Song on my way here. He asked me to tell you that he was ambushed by Xi Feng, Yang Xuyan, and Yang Wengan on his way to Guanzhong and was injured. He will recover in a few days. He told you to be careful of these people."
Yuan Yueze frowned. Zhu Yuyan asked, "Did Wan'er come to Guanzhong to tell us other news?"
Wanwan nodded and said, "Master released Commander Yan that day, and he has already returned to the Turkic Khaganate. Our scouts said that Jieli is very angry about Master's actions and wants to send Bi Xuan to Chang'an. I believe there must be other conspiracies behind this, so Wan'er came to remind Master to be careful."
Bai Qing'er interjected, "Actually, there's no need for Senior Sister to inform us, but Li Tang's arrangement for us to live in the palace is a brilliant move. This completely cuts off our contact with the outside world. After all, there are very few people in the world like Senior Sister who can come and go freely in the heavily guarded palace."
Saying this, Bai Qing'er glanced resentfully at Yuan Yueze, who was lost in thought. A person's name is like a tree's shadow. When they first met in Luoyang, Bai Qing'er was attracted by Yuan Yueze's arrogant demeanor and absolute strength in the face of various masters. Later, when she heard him say that he wanted to avenge her, her gratitude was mixed with love that she herself could sense. Hearing all of Yuan Yueze's secrets from Zhu Yuyan these past few days, he was astonished, and his affection for her deepened. Her glance was clearly annoyance at Yuan Yueze for only helping Wanwan improve her skills.
Yuan Yueze's brow slowly relaxed, and he smiled at Zhu Yuyan, then looked out the window, smiling mysteriously, "If I'm not mistaken, once Zhenzhen returns from the harem, we'll uncover the truth behind many things."
Unbeknownst to them, large snowflakes, as big as goose feathers, had begun to fall outside the window.

Chapter 80: A Storm is Brewing
Wanwan looked at Zhu Yuyan, hesitatingly saying, "Two days before Wan'er left, my grandmaster still secretly slipped away."
Zhu Yuyan's gaze turned cold, and she said, "Although my grandmaster handed over that half-scroll of the 'Heavenly Demon Manual,' he never revealed a single detail about secretly cultivating demonic seeds during his decades of seclusion. At that time, I already knew he
harbored rebellious intentions. If it weren't for my master's sake, how could he still be alive?" Yuan Yueze said, "Since he dared to conceal it, the benefits he received must have been so great that he was willing to risk betraying you. For example, that person is Xi Feng. Although you said Xi Feng was a member of the Great Ming Venerable Sect, at that time they might have thought it was my fallacy and therefore might not have believed it. If Xi Feng not only gave your grandmaster benefits but also promised to glorify your Holy Sect, what reason do you think he would have not to betray you, whose personality has drastically changed?"
Wanwan didn't... Yue said, "What do you mean by 'our Holy Sect'? Don't forget you're also a member of our Holy Sect."
Zhu Yuyan smiled and said, "He didn't mention 'the Demonic Sect,' which shows he's thinking of us. I know what I'm doing regarding my martial uncle's matter. Letting him go isn't entirely out of consideration for him; we can also use him as bait to investigate those elusive members of the Great Ming Venerable Sect. If we can find the Holy Envoy who has been hiding in the Li Clan for decades, that would be even more worthwhile. However, Liu Yu is not only a martial arts prodigy but also a political savvy individual. Although he's an opponent, I have to admire him."
Yuan Yueze grunted and was about to reply when light footsteps came from outside, and a clear voice said, "Sister Yuyan is right, my husband is jealous!"
The door was pushed open, and Shan Meixian and Wei Zhenzhen walked in gracefully.
After exchanging a few greetings and settling down casually, Yuan Yueze asked Wei Zhenzhen with surprise, "Weren't you supposed to go to the harem to treat those poisoned women? You're better so quickly?"
Wei Zhenzhen nodded, glanced at Shan Meixian, and said, "I only took a quick look, but I've already made some progress."
After taking a sip of tea, she continued, "The concubines and palace maids in the harem are almost all people who don't know martial arts and are physically weak. After some deliberation, I realized that it's the 'Burning Sutra Powder' that Sister Meixian mentioned, but..."
At this point, her long eyebrows furrowed slightly.
Everyone present knew about the 'Burning Sutra Powder.' This poisonous powder came from the Demonic Sect's 'Five Poisons Book.' In terms of toxicity, it was far superior to the other poisons listed in the book. More importantly, it only worked on people who didn't know martial arts and were physically weak, and it was especially effective on women. Those poisoned would have their ability to fight disease greatly reduced due to the imbalance of their Qi. However, regardless of the type of poison, the poisoned person will at least show some symptoms. Only this 'Burning Sutra Powder' is not only colorless and odorless, but also affects health indirectly and slowly, so even the best doctors cannot detect poisoning.
This clearly contradicts what Li Yuan said, because that morning he had explicitly stated that everyone in the palace knew about the poisoning of the women in the harem, presumably discovered by imperial physicians or similar personnel.
Several people's gazes turned to Wei Zhenzhen, likely sharing the same question.
Wei Zhenzhen rested her chin on her hand, her delicate brows relaxing, and continued, "However, after examining the concubines and palace maids, I discovered that the poison they were ingested wasn't entirely 'Burning Sutra Powder.' It seems there were some other drugs added that I've never even heard of in all the medical books I've read in recent years."
Yuan Yueze asked, "Then how did you manage to escape?"
Wei Zhenzhen replied, "I made up a few things, saying I was going to personally gather herbs to treat the concubines, which allowed me to quickly tell you all what happened. It's much better to work together than to think about it alone."
Zhu Yuyan, who had been silent until now, chimed in. "Do those poisoned people carry some strange odor from other realms? Like the dry smell of wild animals, or the fragrance of indoor flowers?"
Wei Zhenzhen immediately exclaimed, "Yes, yes! That's the strange smell, completely incomprehensible. Sister Yuyan, do you have any clues?"
Zhu Yuyan shook her head and said, "I only remembered when you mentioned other realms that when I was a teenager, my master occasionally mentioned a strange herb, and I just blurted it out, but that's all I know."
Yuan Yueze interjected, "If those poisoned people are not in serious danger for the time being, you can slowly..." "Slow treatment, no need to rush. The priority now is to find out who is plotting against us."
Wei Zhenzhen nodded and said, "Although the poison is mixed with other poisons, its essence is not much different from 'Burning Sutra Powder,' so the onset period is long, and their lives are not in danger." Zhu Yuyan
then asked, "Yes, Zhenzhen, have you seen Consort Lian? Did you notice anything wrong?"
Wei Zhenzhen was taken aback, then shook her head and said, "Consort Yin is extremely seductive, with a sinister look on her face. Consort Zhang, on the other hand, is a gentle and delicate beauty. Consort Lian has the appearance to bewitch all beings." She was beautiful, possessed a strong exotic charm, and was pregnant with the emperor's child, thus enjoying Li Yuan's favor. Her mood was very poor, and the poison might cause the death of her unborn child. Before leaving, I secretly channeled my inner energy into the three of them to check, and found that apart from Consort Yin, who had practiced martial arts, the other two had no inner energy at all.
Yuan Yueze smiled at Wanwan and Bai Qing'er, "If we're talking about bewitching all beings, these two sisters are number one. Yu Yan has truly taught excellent disciples."
Bai Qing'er and Yuan Yueze weren't very familiar with each other yet, so she felt somewhat awkward. Wanwan, puffed out in anger, leaned back, her high breasts thrusting out, and her small, delicate feet kicked Yuan Yueze.
After dodging the kick, Yuan Yueze laughed, "This matter is indeed very strange. Don't be so gloomy. Let's go out for a walk. Maybe Zhizhi and Yuzhen will bring back some valuable information!"
The girls understood that Yuan Yueze himself had no clue about the matter. A few clues were not enough to deduce the whole thing, so he deliberately made the atmosphere more lively to ease their anxiety. Wanwan
stood up and said, "Wan'er is leaving now. I'll come to see Master again later. Oh, I remember, I met Gadu on the road. I can ask him about that strange Western Region medicine."
Yuan Yueze immediately frowned and said, "You already have a husband. You're not allowed to find another man."
Wanwan's pretty face flushed slightly, and she said defiantly, "Shameless! Wan'er doesn't have a husband."
After saying that, she jumped out of the window and escaped.
Shan Meixian's voice came clearly: "I heard that my junior sister's husband has seen her whole body. If she doesn't marry him, who else can she marry?"
Wanwan, who was rushing across the palace rooftops, swayed and almost lost her balance. She glanced resentfully at the living room behind her, where bursts of laughter were coming from, and quickly walked away.
Zhu Yuyan frowned and said, "I met that Western Region man once last year. At that time, I felt that the true energy in his body was somewhat familiar. Now that I think about it, it was a true energy somewhat similar to that of the Demon Seed. Could it also be related to the Great Ming Venerable Sect?"
Then, for some reason, she added, "I initially told Wan'er not to have too much contact with that man. His origins are unknown, and it seems that he has fallen in love with Wan'er."
Yuan Yueze shook his head. He had met Ga Duo a few times and could tell that the other party was an upright person. But after hearing what Zhu Yuyan said, he realized that intuition was not 100% accurate. So he stood up and said, "Let's go for a walk outside too."
None of the girls wanted to go out with him, lest they be stared at by passersby like monkeys. Shan Meixian then took Bai Qing'er with him.
The heavy snow had turned into light drizzle, and the swirling white snow purified the grand, orderly, solemn imperial palace into a hazy, dreamlike world.
The imperial palace of the Li Tang dynasty consisted of two parts: the Imperial City and the Palace City. The former housed the offices of the central government, while the latter was where the imperial family conducted business and lived. They were separated by a wide, square-like street, over a thousand paces wide, running east to west. All events such as the change of reign title, amnesty, New Year's Day, the winter solstice grand court assembly, military parades, and the acceptance of prisoners of war were held here, hence the name "Outer Court."
The main gates of the Imperial City and the Palace City were three gates located on the north-south central axis. Directly south of the Imperial City was the Zhuque Gate, facing the Mingde Gate, the main gate of the southern part of the city, connected by Zhuque Avenue, the first avenue of Chang'an.
The main gate to the south of the palace city was Chengtian Gate, and the street connecting Chengtian Gate and Zhuque Gate was called Tianjie (Heavenly Street). Xuanwu Gate was the main gate to the north of the palace city, outside which lay the rear courtyard of the palace city, the "West Inner Garden."
The Zhuque, Chengtian, and Xuanwu Gates formed the main axis of the imperial palace city, fortified with strong defenses and heavily guarded. Xuanwu Gate was also the headquarters of the imperial guards, possessing formidable military strength; whoever controlled Xuanwu Gate controlled the palace, and even the entire capital.
The palace city consisted of three parts: the Taiji Palace in the center, the Yeting Palace to the west, and the East Palace to the east.
The Taiji Palace was where Emperor Li Yuan of Tang lived and worked; the East Palace was the residence of Crown Prince Li Jiancheng; the Yeting Palace in the west was the residence of Emperor Taizong of Tang (Li Shimin); and Li Yuanji's Wude Hall was located in the West Inner Garden north of the East Palace.
The Taiji Palace comprises sixteen main halls, the four most important being the Taiji Hall, Liangyi Hall, Ganlu Hall, and Yanjia Hall, all situated along the central axis from Chengtian Gate to Xuanwu Gate.
The Taiji Hall, also known as the "Central Court," was the main building within the Tang Dynasty palace. On the first and fifteenth days of each month, Emperor Li Yuan received his officials and handled state affairs here.
North of the Taiji Hall is the Liangyi Hall, the "Inner Court," where only a select few trusted ministers qualified to make decisions could enter and participate. Important state affairs were often discussed and decided here first, before being proposed and discussed in the "Central Court" regarding the selection of personnel and methods for implementation.
The Lingyan Pavilion is located northeast of the Taiji Palace. To bypass the Liangyi Hall, the two headed southwest. When they arrived at the palace yesterday, it was already late, and the women had mostly stayed inside the carriage, making it far less enjoyable than viewing Chang'an in the snow during the day. Passing Yuehua Gate and the Confucius Temple, the two walked silently towards Xingren Gate.
After admiring the magnificent palaces, halls, camps, gates, and other buildings of the capital city, along with the strict guards, Bai Qing'er glanced at Yuan Yueze, who had remained silent. It turned out that as soon as he left Zhu Yuyan and the other two women, Yuan Yueze's playful smile vanished, replaced by a furrowed brow and a thoughtful expression.
Bai Qing'er chuckled softly, her slender arm taking his arm, and she pressed her delicate body against him. Standing on tiptoe, she whispered approvingly, "Young Master must be afraid of troubling Master and the others, so you're pretending to be nonchalant to avoid worrying them, right?"
Although the frigid weather had almost no effect on cultivators like them, her fiery and alluring body still made Yuan Yueze somewhat unable to resist. Forcing a wry smile, Yuan Yueze didn't reply.
Bai Qing'er continued walking intimately beside him.
Ahead stood the imposing Xingren Gate, and to the right, the Tongming Gate, leading to the Yeting Palace where Li Shimin resided. This spot was located in the least guarded area of the palace. Bai Qing'er leaned close to his ear and whispered, "Logically, Li Yuan wanted us to live in the palace to prevent us from contacting the outside world at any time, yet he allowed us to go out and play whenever we wanted. Isn't that contradictory? What are you thinking, young master? Can Qing'er help?"
Yuan Yueze looked down at Bai Qing'er, who was a head shorter than him, and casually wrapped his large hand around her soft yet supple waist, gently caressing it. He said, "What you said makes sense. I think they might send someone to follow us. I've been thinking about the purpose of this poisoning incident. You know, those who know about 'Burning Sutra Powder' and are our enemies..." There were only four people: Xi Feng, your grand-uncle, Zhao Deyan, and Yang Xuyan. If such a large-scale poisoning was only for our personal grudges, then they truly weren't worthy to be my opponents.
Bai Qing'er felt an indescribable tingling and comfortable sensation from his large hand. She wanted to push him away, but her body was weak, and she was reluctant to give up this wonderful feeling. So, blushing, she leaned against Yuan Yueze and said in a trembling voice, "Our clues aren't complete yet, so it's pointless for you to think about it, young master. The welcoming banquet is in three days; these few days are enough for us to gather reliable intelligence."
Yuan Yueze nodded and smiled, "Miss Qing'er's wit is indeed no less than Wan'er's."
After speaking, that strange hand moved a few more times through Bai Qing'er's thin silk robe on her flat stomach, which had no excess fat. Then, curiously, he asked, "Actually, I don't know much about your feud with Yin Zuwen. I only know that within the Demonic Sect, various factions often exchange disciples to deepen their exchanges. You were the disciple that Yin Zuwen of the Extinction of Emotions gave to Yu Yan. Now that I think about it, it doesn't seem like such a big deal of hatred, does it?"
Bai Qing'er hadn't expected Yuan Yueze to ask about such trivial matters. A bitter smile appeared on her pretty face, and her clear eyes became dreamlike and melancholic. She seemed to become a unique existence in this icy and snowy landscape. After a long silence, he finally said, "Qing'er was just an orphan picked up by Yin Zuwen. If it weren't for him, Qing'er would have died long ago. Back then, Qing'er was extremely grateful to him; he was the last refuge for a child without parents. But he spoke so eloquently, saying that Qing'er had great talent and that he would find me a famous teacher. Later, I learned that I was just a tool he used to control the Yin Gui Sect. He even demanded that if I could unify the Holy Sect, I not only have to offer him the unified 'Heavenly Demon Strategy,' but I also have to acknowledge him as the 'Supreme Emperor.' From then on, my respect for him transformed into..." Hatred mingled with respect; for every ounce of respect, there was an equal measure of hatred. But my goal has never been abandoned. Young Master should know that in terms of cunning and ruthlessness, Qing'er is no less than her senior sister. Although Master previously favored her, Qing'er understood the art of concealing her abilities and enduring hardship far better. Therefore, she vowed to obtain the position of sect leader by any means necessary. Who would have thought that someone like you, from a thousand years in the future, would appear so unexpectedly? The moment Master announced the succession to her senior sister, Qing'er felt that all meaning in life had vanished. If it weren't for the hatred that had kept her under Yin Zuwen's control for so many years, she probably... "Qing'er really will leave and live in seclusion in the mountains."
Yuan Yueze sighed, his large hand moving to her fragrant shoulder. For the first time, he felt the fragility of this ruthless girl beside him. Although many guards were secretly watching the two of them being so intimate in public, Yuan Yueze was unconcerned. There was no lust in his heart. He said softly with pity, "These strange ideas of the Demonic Sect have harmed generations of you!"
After a slight pause, he lowered his head and smiled, "I'm afraid Qing'er stayed not just for revenge, was she?"
Unconsciously, even the way he addressed her had become more intimate.
Bai Qing'er's face flushed slightly, and the fragrance she exhaled turned into white smoke, enveloping her beautiful features, giving her a unique ethereal and otherworldly air. She gave Yuan Yueze a charming glare and said in a low voice, "You know all this and you still ask me! Do you take pleasure in making me look bad?"
This was the open-minded and bold woman of the Demonic Sect, who did not hide her emotions at all.
Then, with a sweet smile, her jade-like face as beautiful as a plum blossom blooming in the cold winter, she said
in a charming voice, "I never thought I could pursue my own happiness, but since Master has said I should fight for it myself, then I admit I've fallen in love with you, but I will never give in to you before Senior Sister surrenders, young master, don't be so smug!" Under Bai Qing'er's astonished gaze, Yuan Yueze suddenly laughed loudly, all his worries vanishing.
Just as he was about to speak again, Bai Qing'er twisted her delicate body like a serpent, struggling out of Yuan Yueze's embrace.
Looking up, Yuan Yueze realized that the two of them had reached Chengtian Gate, the central gate of the city wall shared by the palace and the imperial city. Thousands of guards inside the gate and on the city wall were staring at Yuan Yueze and Bai Qing'er, their strange gazes making even Bai Qing'er feel shy.
After simply greeting the city guard he had met the day before and declining the guide and guards sent by Li Jiancheng, Yuan Yueze and his companion leisurely walked through Chengtianmen Street, which was lined with government offices such as the Court of Imperial Sacrifices, the Court of Imperial Sacrifices, the Ministry of Personnel, the Imperial Ancestral Temple, the Imperial Household Department, the Water Conservancy Department, and the Eastern Palace Palace, and onto the wide Zhuque Street outside the gate.
Bai Qing'er leaned closer again and whispered, "It's so easy to enter and leave the palace. Li Yuan must have given the order long ago. But there's no one following us. Is the Li Tang Dynasty really so comfortable with us going out?"
Yuan Yueze was also puzzled, then laughed and said, "Never mind that. Let's just treat today as a shopping trip with Qing'er!"
Bai Qing'er even showed the joyful and charming demeanor of a young girl, clapping her hands and cheering.
Walking on the wide Zhuque Street, once again feeling the bustling scene of the main streets of a famous city, the two turned left at the first intersection, Xingdaofang, the residence of Princess Taiping of the Li Tang Dynasty, and entered Chang'an Street.
Chang'an City was divided into three main parts: the Palace City, the Imperial City, and the Outer City. The Palace City was located in the northern center of the city, the Imperial City was to the south of the Palace City, and the Outer City extended outwards to the east, west, and south, centered on the Palace City and the Imperial City. It was the residential and commercial area for commoners and officials. The residential areas were called "fang" (坊), and the commercial areas were called "shi" (市), with fang and shi separated.
Yuan Yueze and his companion were currently within the Outer City.
Traveling eastward, passing through Wubenfang and Pingkangfang, they entered the East Market. The four streets, laid out in a grid pattern, were lined with shops of all kinds. In addition to local products and general merchandise, all kinds of rare and precious items were available. Wine shops and restaurants lined both sides. Pedestrians thronged the streets, creating a lively scene.
They found a shop called "Lao Sun Yang Geng" (老孙羊羹) by the roadside, ordered two bowls of its special meat soup, and enjoyed the delicious food while admiring the peaceful and prosperous atmosphere of Chang'an City.
Bai Qing'er gracefully sipped two mouthfuls of hot soup, then sighed and praised, "This soup is rich in flavor, the meat is tender and the broth is thick, the aroma is enticing, and the aftertaste is endless. In such cold weather, it's even more effective in inducing sweating and warming the stomach."
A waiter who had just finished serving a table of soup happened to pass by and said with a smile, "Madam Yuan is truly insightful; I admire you."
No matter how low-key Yuan Yueze's style was, his familiar purple robes, handsome face, the transparent longsword in his left hand, and the flawless beauty beside him were all so conspicuous that they were recognized as soon as they left the city gates. Being mistaken for Yuan Yueze's wife, Bai Qing'er was inevitably embarrassed.
After finishing the soup and paying the bill, the two arrived at 'Yu Xinglong', located in the southeast of the East Market. The shop had almost become an independent 'workshop,' bustling with people.
Led by a servant, the two went to the quiet backyard and met Song Shuang, Song Yuzhi's cousin, who had been managing the shop for several years.
Upon their arrival, the people inside rose to greet them. After a few polite exchanges, the other management figures withdrew, leaving only Song Shuang, Yuan Yueze, Song Yuzhi, Yun Yuzhen, and Bai Qing'er.
Yun Yuzhen asked, "Husband, were you followed on the road?"
Yuan Yueze shook his head, "No, were you followed?"
Yun Yuzhen nodded, pouting, "If we weren't so cautious, they would have killed them in the street long ago."
Yuan Yueze chuckled, "You're all becoming violent women! As long as we don't say anything unnecessary, what can they do if they follow us?"
After Yun Yuzhen nodded, Yuan Yueze then asked Song Shuang, "Uncle, have you made any special discoveries in the past few years?"
Song Shuang was particularly fond of this unpretentious young man and laughed heartily, "Speaking of the interior..." Among the salt merchants, there are only three major ones: Yuxinglong, Guangshenghang, and Xingchanglong. For the past few years, we've been fiercely competitive. Guangshenghang has the backing of the Tang Dynasty's Crown Prince, while Xingchanglong has close ties with Prince Qin, Li Shimin's faction. Although Yuxinglong has no powerful backers within the pass, its low-key approach and your reputation have kept it relatively trouble-free. Originally, the other two were secretly plotting against us, but after Prince Qin defeated Xue Ju and his son, they incurred the Crown Prince's suspicion. Under the instigation of the treacherous Prince Qi, the Crown Prince first... Consort Bin, who flattered and ingratiated herself with the Emperor, was used as a source of support. Because Prince Qin was often away leading troops, those far away became distant while those nearby grew closer. Furthermore, Prince Qin never respected the concubines' opinions. As a result, Consort Bin, led by Consort Zhang and Consort Yin, sided with Crown Prince Jiancheng, spreading rumors and slander against Prince Qin before the Emperor, causing the Emperor to gradually become suspicious of Prince Qin. The power of the Crown Prince faction, led by Jiancheng and Yuanji, grew greatly. Gu Tianzhang, the big boss of Guang Sheng Hang, also became unruly, turning his attention to Xing Chang Long, daring to threaten Xing Chang Long with force and even sending men to plunder it. "The salt ships must be destroyed by 'Xingchanglong'. 'Xingchanglong's' biggest backer is Prince Qin, and they have shared in Li Shimin's rise and fall. But since the remnants of Li Mi's forces surrendered, the South China Sea faction has openly sided with Li Jiancheng, and the Turks have also formed relations with him, greatly increasing the strength of Li Jiancheng's Changlin Army. In addition, with the collusion with Yang Wengan, Prince Qin's Tiance Mansion has been overshadowed, and 'Xingchanglong' is struggling to survive."
Hearing Song Shuang's words, it was obvious that although 'Yuxinglong' was ostensibly a trading company, it was actually Yuan Yueze's largest intelligence outpost in Guanzhong.
Song Yuzhi gave a coquettish snort and said, "They dare not provoke Uncle again, naturally because they heard the news that my husband is going to enter the pass. Once they become disobedient, no one can protect their lives."
Yun Yuzhen chimed in, "Another reason is likely that the Crown Prince's faction understands that their biggest enemy right now is Li Shimin."
Yuan Yueze said, "I heard that Li Shimin also presented a foreign beauty to Li Yuan, but why didn't it create much momentum?"
Song Shuang smiled mysteriously and said, "Very few people know the inside story of this matter. I only heard it by chance while drinking with Xiao Xiuming, a martial arts instructor at 'Xingchanglong', whom I've known for many years." It was said that Consort Lian was not a virgin, but Xue Rengao, who surrendered, claimed that his father had never touched her. Furthermore, spies planted by the Crown Prince in the army said that Consort Lian had spent the night in the Qin Prince's tent the day before entering Chang'an. Less than a month after being presented to Li Yuan, she dreamt of a bear, which greatly pleased Li Yuan and made the other concubines jealous. Since becoming pregnant with the Emperor's child, Consort Lian's status had soared, and for some reason, she sided with the Crown Prince. Xiao Xiuming, drunk, said it was because she was pregnant with the Qin Prince's child but was ruthlessly abandoned and presented to Li Yuan, turning love into hatred.
Yuan Yueze frowned deeply upon hearing this. What was all this nonsense?! After pondering for a moment, he said, "This behavior is unlike Li Shimin's style, and he has no reason to give his father a cheap son."
At this point, a sudden realization flashed through Yuan Yueze's mind, and he looked up, saying, "Yang Xuyan is an expert in this area. Originally, this tactic was supposed to be used on Dong Shuni, but Dong Shuni has long since disappeared. Could Consort Lian be related to him?"
Bai Qing'er frowned and said, "If we follow your reasoning, young master, the person who poisoned us is likely Yang Xuyan. Sister Zhenzhen said that Consort Lian was also poisoned, and even the fetus might not survive. Even if Yang Xuyan is ruthless, he wouldn't kill the child. If the unborn child is truly his flesh and blood, it should be his most important bargaining chip, wouldn't it?"
Just as she was about to reply, a report came from outside: "Reporting to the young master and young lady, the young marshal and Young Master Xu have arrived outside Chunming Gate."
A strange smile appeared on Yuan Yueze's lips.
