I've been on this website for a while now, but haven't had time to write anything. I just browse around, looking at other people's photos and blogs, getting some excitement and pleasure from them as a kind of diversion from life. From some of these blogs, I've also sensed another kind of enjoyment in the pursuit of life and sexual happiness—another lifestyle, contrary to conventional wisdom, but one that is also enjoyable. It also inevitably makes one think more about life and existence. Today, I finally have some free time, and suddenly I have the urge to write something.
That was 10 years ago. Due to a Sino-foreign cooperation project, I accompanied a foreign company (where I originally worked) to Beijing and a well-known large IT company in China to work on a Sino-foreign cooperative project, responsible for coordinating the project between the two sides. Because of the many differences in culture, language, and other aspects between the two sides, communication became one of the key factors for the project's success. As one of the few Chinese people in the company, I was assigned to be responsible for the initial liaison and coordination work for the project, and I went to Beijing.
Arriving in Beijing alone, I initially faced numerous inconveniences and difficulties adjusting to both work and life. I was incredibly grateful to my assistant, a beautiful 25-year-old Beijing native who had recently married and joined the company. She provided me with a great deal of help. Her workstation was right in front of my office, with her back to me. Sitting in my office, I could see her back through the transparent glass window next to the door. Through the changing seasons, I witnessed her graceful figure silhouetted against the ever-changing clothing. For the sake of that silhouette, the blinds on that glass window were rarely drawn.
My work was demanding; I traveled almost every week, sometimes three to four times a week, often leaving early and returning late. Each trip was accompanied by four to five people from related departments, but she was my regular companion. At that time, there were frequent air disasters both domestically and internationally, adding a considerable layer of fear to my already tense air travel. Some mischievous colleagues even joked that flying occasionally wasn't a problem, but since I was flying as frequently as a flight attendant, I should be more careful. I didn't know how to be careful—should I fasten my seatbelt or hold on tight to the handrail? Fortunately, her companionship gave me a strange sense of comfort. My story with her began in the office.
At that time, I was a married man, having left my wife and children to come to Beijing. My son had just learned to speak, but he still needed more effort to express himself clearly. Every day, he would leave a voicemail message on my office phone. No matter what time it was, the message was almost always, "Dad, have you eaten?" A very authentic greeting, which I never tired of hearing.
At that time, she was a newlywed. She would sit outside my window for eight hours every day. That back view is still etched in my mind, and that back view later destroyed my marriage and family.
I would stay in the office until after 10 pm every day, sometimes even later, whether I was working or had nothing to do, because I was alone when I returned to my residence, and I didn't have the concept of eight hours or no hours. But slowly, I was surprised to find that that back view often stayed with me until very late. At first, I didn't think much of it, probably because she was too busy with work and needed to work overtime. But I knew her job didn't require her to work 3-4 days a week, and for a newlywed like her, coming home so late so often naturally aroused my curiosity. However, I didn't want to pry into her privacy, so I would just say in a concerned tone, "Don't come home too late, you can finish your work tomorrow." She would simply reply, "I'm leaving soon."
It was a Friday, a rare quiet day. A sandstorm hit Beijing, turning the entire sky yellow, and the tall buildings standing against the yellow sky were quite a sight. It was also my first time experiencing a sandstorm. That evening, I stayed until after 10 pm as usual, preparing to pack up and leave the office to go home. I habitually looked up at the window, but that beautiful figure was no longer there. A sense of loss and loneliness washed over me.
Carrying my laptop bag, I left the office and saw her waiting for the elevator. It was quite a coincidence, and I was pleasantly surprised. I pretended to be calm and started chatting with her.
"Is someone coming to pick you up?" I asked.
“No, I’ll take the bus,” she said.
…
“Then I’ll take you. It’s inconvenient to take the bus so late,” I said.
“Thank you so much, but it’s a bit far,” she said.
“It’s okay, I’m free anyway, it’s fine to go home alone, and I don’t have to work tomorrow,” I said, thinking the farther the better, so I could spend some time alone with her and find out more about her. She often comes home late; maybe she just likes spending time with me. I thought to myself, feeling quite pleased with myself. This must be a case of opposites attracting.
So we got in the car and drove slowly through the neon-lit streets, chatting idly. Later I learned that her husband was a host for a TV program, even busier than me, often not home, so she was just bored and stayed in the office. My heart sank. So her lateness wasn’t because of me. I really hoped we’d get to our destination quickly so I could go home. But the traffic was so congested that we couldn’t drive fast no matter what. Of course, I still chatted with her with great interest.
I wasn’t familiar with Beijing, and she kept telling me about different areas. After a while, we arrived near a place called Bar Street. She suggested we go to the bar street for drinks, to let me experience Beijing's nightlife and relax for a while before leaving. I said I didn't mind, and asked if it was convenient since it was late. She said she was home alone today and had nothing to do. So we went to a bar on the bar street.
Entering the bar, soft, melodious music filled the air, and the dim candlelight illuminated pairs of handsome men and beautiful women, making me feel that anyone who wasn't good-looking would be embarrassed to come in. The night was indeed made even more beautiful by the candlelight illuminating the couples.
She walked ahead of me, asking the waiter for directions, and suddenly reached out and took my hand, leading me to find an empty table. This sudden hand-holding, so natural and relaxed, completely lacked the formality and seriousness we displayed at work, yet it made my heart race. I followed her leisurely, seeing her beautiful back and the occasional glimpses of her profile illuminated by the candlelight. Her beauty was breathtaking; I involuntarily swallowed. I continued walking, like an older sister leading a younger brother, even though I'm actually ten years older than her. Couples sitting on either side of us occasionally glanced up at us, and I felt a strange sense of pride, as if she were my partner. I thought, why don't we be a couple tonight?
